if your wife is anything like my wife, just get her the Peloton, because if the knockoff is even slightly worse than what she wants, she'll never use it and you will eventually end up getting the Peloton anyways

Look, I'm a dad too. I went from thousands of miles a year on a road bike to almost zero. Why? Because I had a kid. So I TOTALLY get the challenge of trying to work out with kids in the picture. But guess what? We got the kid a mtb last year and started going on our first trail rides.

She doesn't want to ride on the road dude, it's a pretty simple concept to understand. People have different goals and preferences, no matter how many times you repeat t yourself.

You and her having completely different priorities/preferences. Thanks for the advice, but I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

Fair enough. Cheers.

Peloton should throw some commission money the way of some of the posters on here because I'm going to buy one tonight. Maybe I'll get a couple blowjobs out of it too.

I love this school of thought from the fat out if shape guys.

Or maybe they speak from experience where they have bought a piece of home exercise equipment that eventually became a clothes rack. Snark aside, I think it's a fair concern when you're talking about a $2,000 piece of equipment that then also requires a monthly app subscription. That's a lot of money to shell out if it eventually just turns into a piece of furniture. I understand though that these things don't lose much value on the secondary market, so that does mitigate some risk.

There are a literal ton of used ones for sale on Facebook. Several versions too which actually worries me because why is Peloton making different versions every couple years. People are apparently replacing theirs with newer versions. That fact has persuaded me to stop shopping.

I’ll second the road bike. No replacement for the exploration of getting outside and getting it done. I don’t think you’ll find a 16lb road bike for Peloton $ though. Maybe Peleton plus a year or 2 of subscription.

Edit-also note Peloton is shipping bikes something like 4-6 weeks from purchase. It’s usually faster to find a used one and get it then a new one.

I didn't end up doing the Miley ride, I did a 30 minute power zone ride with Denis.

Believe it or not, what I have in my road bike is about what a new peloton costs. But I built it myself from the frame up. I got a really good deal on a good chunk of the components.

I use the Peloton App on a regular treadmill and on a regular bike trainer. I think I pay $13 a month for it. You don't get the power readings, but you can do live classes or replay old ones. You can also download classes and use them at the gym if you want.

In addition they have yoga, full body workouts, outdoor running, etc.

Our health insurance covers a certain amount each month that can be applied to a gym membership. Old gym membership was something ridiculous like $185/mo (side note: frick you, Equinox). So when the pandemic shut everything down, we just bought the bike and the monthly membership is not only covered, but the remaining balance goes back to us for the cost of the bike.

I just looked and there weren't any around Birmingham. A few in Atlanta and Huntsville.

Some people live in places where it's cold and snowy/icy for a good portion of the year. I'll stick to indoor cycling and just run when it warms up.

This is the big thing people are missing out on. Sure if she wants to be a cyclist get her an equivalent priced road bike with trainer. But for one, she's not going to like riding a road bike because it isn't showing the metrics and competition that the Peloton does, or you're going to pay a *gasp* monthly subscription for Zwift.

And if you think you're going to save some cash by getting her some clunker of a bike and throwing it on a Walmart trainer it's only going to turn her off faster and have you shelling out for the Peloton anyway.

There is an old saying in cycling. Cheap, light, strong. Pick any two.

What do you ride?

I’m on a Specialized Venge Pro. I’m not a huge weight weenie but last time I weighed it it was almost exactly 16lbs with Gatorskins and Ultegra. I think I could sub 16lb it with a couple mods, no lights, computer, etc
