The impact of alcohol on the human body

I’ve fluctuated between 190-195 for most of 2017. No big deal because I normally lift heavy and I like the extra pounds for strength (or so I told myself)
Truth be told, I got out of the military at about 170 and I haven’t touched that since 2011 time frame. Anyway, I wouldn’t call myself an alcoholic but I can certainly put down some liquor. I’d usually go through about a fifth a week.
I still lifted normally and ran about 5-8 miles a week but couldn’t get the “bad weight” weight to come off.
I made a commitment to my wife and kid to put down the booze for a month. Not have a single drink. I know it’s only a month but this would be the longest lapse of not drinking for me in 10 years.
Anyway, in a month I’ve dropped down to 175 without changing a single thing about my diet. I still eat almost exactly the same as before. Now, it has afforded me the unhungover weekends, so I’ve been able to up my running to about 15 miles a week rather than the 8 I was before, so I’m sure that’s knocked a couple of pounds off too...
Now I know 190-175 doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, but I was already in pretty good shape to begin with, and I simply don’t have a lot of fat to shed like that. It’s lead me to the conclusion- one I already knew; which is that alcohol has a tremendous impact on the human body. I cut it out for a month and I haven’t felt this good since my time in the military.
Carry on...

I’ve been dry the better part of January. No week drinking and limit it to 2 beers at most. Been very life changing.
There’s a thread on alcohol if you scroll back you should check out.
I applaud your commitment to your family and hope it continues to improve.

Marry into a Mexican family and live at your mom in laws after getting out the Army
That's how you gain weight

At the end of the day alcohol is mostly sugar so if you stopped drinking completely you took a shite ton of sugar out of your diet. Not surprised you dropped a lot of weight quickly, plus the added excercise.

I quit drinking for a year and went from 175 to 198. Started back, Jack Daniels and water, and I’m down to 170
Eating habits never changed

I'm an alcoholic and sober for a little over a year. Currently in the best shape of my life. 6 foot 175 and just hit the 1,000 club.
If you think you can cut out the booze, do it. It does your body no favors and really messes with sleep and recovery time.
Good luck

Congrats on the sobriety!
It really does jack up sleep beyond one glass of wine (or equivalent). At that level, it may boost seratonin, but any more and it’s a hard opposite effect.
What I’d really like is to get a few ounces of Key Lime Pie back from CO and periodically burn some herb and replace the booze. For those winding down moments.
I’ve never been a huge fan of cannabis, but last month in the mountains was awesome. Wife likes me better on the herb too......laid back and giggly.

Alcohol is also inflammatory to your system. The human body, put simply, retains water to deal with inflammation. It’s likeky you’ve lost some water weight too. Good job.

Everyone always makes this broad generalization that if you cut alcohol and/or sodas you’ll drop 15-20 pounds. There’s still this thing called food and calories.

Well Paul, Alcohol has a shite ton of calories and many people tend to overeat or indulge in greasy food for the "fourth meal" after they've been drinking. Do that regularly and you will pack on the pounds.
Luckily I've never been overweight and have always been active, but the last year or two of my drinking was not pretty. One night of drinking for me was a fifth of bourbon plus a bottle of wine or a 6 pack of light beer. All in isolation. That is a lot of calories, more than most peoples average day of food intake.

Drinking just one 12-ounce can of soda every day for a year is equal to 55,000 calories, or 15 pounds a year.

Nice work.
As part of whole 30, I haven't drank this month. I haven't seen that kind of weight loss, but I feel a lot better and it has helped me recognize that I was drinking too much to be very successful at losing weight.

I cut out sugar, butter and cheese but increased my beer intake from casual binging to full fledged drinking too much and suddenly developed a semi six pack.

Dang, I hardly ever drink ( one beer a month), and I still need to shed a few pounds. I'm just into the "overweight" category, according to the chart that everyone complains about being unrealistic.

I know this is anecdotal, but I'm going to say it anyway.
I've never been able to really drink alcohol. It makes me have awful, awful heartburn after one or two drinks and then I always get blood-sugar issues in the middle of the night afterwards. Seriously, one beer and I'm up from 1am until 4am unable to sleep.
So I've been drunk maybe five times in my life (college) and have averaged maybe one drink every 2-3 weeks up until a few years ago when I just stopped having any.
I'm told all the time that I don't look my age at all. I ran into a former student of mine that I taught 10 years ago and the first thing is said was, "Holy. shite. You do not age. Like at all."
Not saying I'm attractive by any means. I look more like Shrek than Brad Pitt. But I can say that having smoked maybe 5 or 6 cigars in my life and rarely ever drinking alcohol, I'm aging really well compared to my peers.

I cut my drinking down from 3-5 nights a week anywhere from 3 beers to a full night 10+
now with kids 2 maybe 3 times a week, 3 beers maybe 4 max.
