I’m experiencing shoulder pain whenever I do snatches. Any other overhead movement does not cause this. OHP, jerks, push press, bench, etc. do not cause the pain. It occurs only when I snatch. It is quite painful, but it does not limit my mobility. I still have my full ROM, but it just hurts quite a bit. What could it be? I’m increasing my shoulder mobility so hopefully that will help.

Stop snatching. Just clean and press. It does nothing for you that you can’t get from cleans and presses IMO. Snatching is a recipe for shoulder ailments.

Well you should definitely stop snatching while they are causing pain

Is it on both shoulders?

I haven’t put any weight on the barbell while I’m trying to figure it out. It’s only in my right shoulder.

Every time I experience the random new pains on a specific movement, I typically just give that movement a break for 2 weeks to see if it can heal itself.

If it doesn’t affect you ROM, I just assume it’s some type of impingement.

Yeah I’ve given it time. I’m going to hammer in more mobility. Hopefully it will alleviate my problem.

I’d just advise you to not continue mobility if you still feel pain

I guess we just have to pretend that this word isn’t funny?

It’s funny if you’re 12.

And you're still having shoulder pain? Sorry for the sound advice, shouldn't have wasted my time.

Completely stopping is not sound advice.

When you're having pain from little to no resistance, it is brother. Snatch isn't a core lift! Keep squatting, bench, cleans and pull ups and your good.

It causes pain, but it’s not an injury. Which means there is something I’m doing incorrectly that is causing the pain. I want to compete in an oly event one day. I have to be able to snatch. My ROM is still there and I just finished a strong shoulders day with zero pain.

Might want to hire a coach or go see a PT to help with figuring this out. H&F board doesn't have too many experienced oly lifters.

Make sure your shoulders are locked in tight for the catch. I used to get pain from not being totally set and locked in for the catch. If your are having to press just a little to lock out at the top that could be it. Snatch balances could help with that if that is an issue. Hope you get it figured out. Just my .02

Ok, David Goggins yea it is. Coming from someone who had a 10+ year olympic lifting career, doing snatches when your shoulder is hurting...from snatches...is a great way to look like a hardo for 3 months then abruptly end your weightlifting career because your shoulder is fricked up six ways to Sunday

ETA: just to be clear so I’m actually giving you advice, snatch injuries are not standard injuries that are going to hurt all the time. Your rotator cuff isn’t going to be engaged if you’re doing a bodybuilding shoulder workout so it won’t hurt during those movements. That doesn’t mean you don’t have an injury though, go throw a baseball as hard as you can and tell us how great it feels after that. Snatches aren’t complicated, you should be keeping it close to your body, not swinging it, catching the bar 100% tight and trying to push it through the ceiling and stretch it out, but that probably isn’t going to do you much good at this point.

I had about as healthy of an Olympic lifting career as someone can have and my shoulders still sound like bubble wrap anytime I reach above my head. It’s just not a healthy sport and you’re probably going to have to decide if you want to be permanently maimed in the name of competing or if you want to take some time off and have a healthy body at 40.

Take whatever you want from what I said- you probably won’t listen but the currently-very-popular Jocko Willink “Shoulder pain? GOOD. PUSH THROUGH IT” mindset isn’t healthy or good for your life and you seem to be caught up in it. I lived that for a long time and 100% of people who do that regret it in hindsight
