Check my thread from a few weeks ago, very similar questions with responses.

What’s the sub categories of your LDL look like? LDL-pattern A (big fluffy, low risk) and pattern B (small dense, atherogenic). Doctors like to lump these two together without seeing the whole picture. If you’re eating a lot of meat then your LDL-A is probably higher. If you’re eating a lot of processed foods and sugar, LDL-B is probably higher
This.
Particle size & number is a more accurate predictor. To get that, request a NMR lipid panel.
You want large, 'fluffy' particles of cholesterol.
You don't want small, dense particles. Its those small dense particles that bore into the inner layer of the arteries that cause build up of pimple-like lesions which erupt like a volcano that has the potential to cause blockage.
To take it even further, get the Cleerly heart scan. Its a fairly new test for heart disease and is starting to catch on.
The standard lipid panel test are outdated and not as accurate.
There are good carbs and there are bad carbs
There are good fats and there are bad fats.
There is good 'clean' protein and bad 'dirty' protein.
Cut the sugar, and its in a lot of processed foods, colas, sodas, sports drinks. Big food hides it under many different names.
Why?
Because they know that sugar is highly addictive and makes our bodies want more, more of their junk.
Cut crappy fat, trans fats and refines vegetable/seed oils are garbage.
Get good healthy fats from fish(not fried), avocados, nuts, seeds...
Statins? Beware. A cardiologist put me on the them(10mg Lipitor) and I felt like I was with a truck. Muscle soreness and joint aches.
The side effects out weigh the benefits, if there are any.
Do your own research on statins and their side effects.

Don’t do a statin man. Research Dr Livingood. Grab some of his vitamins for cholesterol. Made a world of a difference for me

Peter Attia has a ton on this and what can be done with and without pharmaceuticals. It’s one of his “four Horsemen” and the take-home message is it’s one of the easiest ones to completely eliminate.
He’s a big fan of testing apoB but once you know if your apoB and cholesterol are concordant, all the same rules apply.

quote:This. It takes almost all of the guesswork out of it. Cleerly + Apo-B will give you way more info than guessing at the relevance of cholesterol numbers. I predict Cleerly will be dominant in less than 5 years - and will make CAC obsolete.
To take it even further, get the Cleerly heart scan.
Repeat: if statin, start at no higher than 5mg. Also, if you want to invest in a genetic + epigenetic test, that can help your doc dial in which from the buffet of statins would be most appropriate for you specifically. Doc might also have you take ezemetibe as well.

Do you have to go to cardiologist to get a cleerly scan?
Posted on 4/28/25 at 7:43 pm to Tiger Ryno
If you're going to go the statin route, and your doctor prescribes 20mg, ask to drop that down to 5mg and have your blood work done a month or so down the road. Doctors tend to be heavy handed on the statin dosages.
I went from 240 to 160 on a 20mg dose then went down to 5mg and I'm consistently at 180.

IDK, I have found two places in Louisiana that presently offers the Cleerly Heart scan. One is in Shreveport and the other is located somewhere in southwest Louisiana.
I am starting to see the procedure offered more and more in the larger cities.
I would think that a cardio Doc would have to interpret the results and make suggestions based on the results.

Not really. High blood pressure and inflammation would have you in a bad situation though

get on a 20mg satin and you'll be fine. I'm 37
You need to see a new doc

help or hurt my cholesterol?
Id suggest not viewing cholesterol as the problem. Id agree with others that losing 20 lbs would have you in much better situation

The more and more I read on cholesterol and statins, the more I am convinced that statins are not worth the risk to ones health.
I am no expert on this stuff and not a medical professional. The older I get, the more I am realizing that I need to be informed on medical issues.
Our livers produce more than enough cholesterol that our bodies need. Its the extra junk like sugars like high fructose corn syrup that poisons our bodies.
Our brains are composed of nearly 25% cholesterol.
Is there a link between statin use and Alzheimer's disease?
Here's another article similar to the link you posted:
•There is a widespread belief that elevated cholesterol is the “cause” of cardiovascular disease. However, a large body of evidence shows that there is no association between the two and that lower cholesterol significantly increases one’s risk of death.

•An alternative model (which the medical industry buried) proposes that the blood clots the body uses to heal arterial damage, once healed, create the characteristic atherosclerotic lesions associated with heart disease. The evidence for this model, in turn, is much stronger than the cholesterol hypothesis and provides many important insights for treating heart disease.
•The primary approach to treating heart disease is to prescribe cholesterol lowering statin drugs (to the point, over a trillion dollars have now been spent on them). Unfortunately, the benefits of these highly toxic drugs are minuscule (e.g., at best taking them for years extends your life by a few days) and the harms are vast (statins are one of the most common pharmaceuticals that severely injure patients).
•In this article we will explore the specific injuries caused by statin drugs, the forgotten causes of cardiovascular disease, and our preferred treatments for heart and vascular diseases.

You can lower your cholesterol by eating oatmeal every day morning and a glass of red wine at night. Also increase your exercise. If you can afford a trainer, that is better. Good luck!

Do some research and like others said, get your Apo A and B tested. What are your triglycerides?
I cant recommend Peter Attias bestseller that came out 18 months ago, Outlive.
Hes a cardiologist that goes into the 4 pillars of death- heart disease, diabetes, cancer and neurological diseases. Talks in depth about what people need to do in middle age and what he has his patients do.
Outlive
Also, just remember the most important metric on a food label regarding cholesterol is saturated fat, not how much cholesterol is in a food.
