I’m 43 and lately I’ve been pushing myself to see how heavy I can go. My brother swears that eventually I will tear something due to my age. He says it’s not a matter of if but when. Is this accurate? Is maxing out at my age really that risky?

Just be sure to warm up extra w/ age. Other than that and proper form everything will be good.

Eventually you may tear something lifting a box. Good form, good recovery and proper programming...you'll be a better person.

Injuries can happen to anyone. shite happens. If you maintain a good diet, good programming, recover as needed and warm up properly, your chances of injury are pretty low. Just do things correctly and don’t worry about it. 43 ain’t old.

Personally, unless you want to compete in powerlifting, I don't think you need to do 1RM anymore. Studies show that one rep maxing doesn't build any more size than doing work in the 3-4 rep range. I know at 41, my joints appreciate me not going crazy heavy anymore. You can build a great physique (even at our age) without going lower than 5 reps in your training. Just make sure you're progressing, and the gains will come.

I mean...you probably will

Whether or not that means you shouldn't do it is up to you.

Chances that you injure yourself doing any strenuous activity goes up as you age. Doesn't mean you should stop doing it. Just means you need to actively do things to help prevent the injuries, whether that be warming properly, nightly yoga, or lifting less weight.

Call your brother a pussy and keep hitting the weights.

I hit all of my PRs in the last 3-4 years in my 40s.

I’m 42. Strongest I’ve ever been and still going up. Pound it hard with good form and watch the gains roll in.

My understanding is it’s really only the shoulders that get more vulnerable as we age

I'm in the 40s also and have been weight lifting since I was a teenager. No significant injuries yet, although feel that I have to pay attention to certain things now. Warming up as someone mentioned is a big one.

I think it may be inevitable to some extent that injuries will happen. Although for me, it's much more likely to be playing sports since I try to compete with good athletes in their 20s.

I pulled a 610 deadlift at 200 pounds 2 years ago when I was 46 but I’ve backed way off that lately just because that was a lifetime goal to triple dead my body weight. Still squat into the 500’s. The only injuries I get these days is from BJJ.

Man if you lift regularly, you'll be fine. Just stretch/warm up first. You're 43, not 83.
