3 miles warm-up, then 2x5km @ slightly slower than 10k pace. 3:00 jog rest between them. Cool down to hit 10 miles. 5ks were 21:10, 21:12.
I was supposed to TT another 10k today but my IT band has been tight, and as a result my hip and knee have a little bit of soreness. I'll get it worked out before the race but turning today into a workout was safer than time trialing.

Been running the reverse Statue last couple of weeks. I don’t have anyone to pace my long runs with anyway. Carb loaded after my 15 with the wife at Salem’s. Last week was Dimitri’s. Not sure what I’ll do next week. Hell, we might have snow or some shite.

You do you, but if I'm running that many hills I want views like we had this morning overlooking Birmingham during sunrise or on a trail

Not a chance, I love running when it's freezing. Got a new head thing for when it dips to 20 and below, might get to use it this week. Start cold, stay comfy once you're going. Sweat freezing on the beard is fun.

Gonna try for a sub 1:45 half marathon in April. That's right at 8:09 per mile. Not sure I can do it. Only thing that gives me hope is the negative splits I had today.

For some reason, I decided to start running again at 51 years of age. I work out daily and am very active on the mountain bike. That being said, I weigh over 200 pounds.
I was really enjoying my runs and worked up to 4 miles at 10 minute pace. Decided to push it the other day for a 5k on strava and got my 5k down to a 9 minute mile pace.
Sadly... one of my knees now feels wrecked after that run (there were some big, steep descents that I probably shouldn't have pushed so hard on). It's getting better, and I feel like I can likely run again without much pain (I've been cycling in the meantime as well as lifting), but not sure if I should do a run again until pain is all gone.
Also: I'm an idiot and just ran in some "running" shoes I had laying around which were Nike Huraches. If I decide to keep running, I think I better go to a running store and get pronation/supination. measured and proper training shoes.

Hey, good on you for getting going again. I started running again more frequently about a year and a half ago and had similar issues with my ankle. I'd say definitely wait, and then (and this is the part that sucks), try to run much slower. Like.....11-12 minute mile slow jogs. You'll get faster by running slower, your body will adapt better. For those of us who want to push because we know we have the potential to go faster, it's torture. I hated doing it and even didn't understand how it worked. Still don't, I just know it does. But I'd get out there and trot at a snails pace for 30-45 mins and sure enough my times started to come down. it is very odd, but it works wonders if you have bad knees/ankles/back.

I am also 51 and my main sport is mtb. I run 2-3 days a week and it has made me much stronger on the bike. I can pretty much ride all day now.
Get real shoes and ease back into it.

That’s sort of the appeal for me. To increase my bike capacity, it feels like I need to spend way more time (2-4 hours) rising whereas I can knock out a good run and get my dopamine going in less than an hour with positive results for my riding when I’m having fun on the weekend.
Also can get weekday runs in after work even in shorter and colder hours of winter and even when trails are too wet to ride.

Yep. I can walk out my front door and knock out a nice hour run before work. I spend 40 minutes driving to the trailhead and back with the bike. The cross training pays off big time.

Not gonna lie, wussed out tonight with the cold. Went to the gym and jumped rope for an hour in zone 2. Best way to strengthen your feet IMO.

How does one jump rope for an hour?
Posted on 1/7/25 at 6:56 am to RandySavage
Get a good jump rope. Someone here recommended an RX (RXsmartgear). Got that one.
Mix it up. Go slow, single leg, speed it up, cross over, etc, etc. Goal is to keep your HR in zone 2.
Barefoot if you can.
I count cross training efforts as mileage as long as they are zone 2 efforts. An hour of flat, cool, zone 2 running is roughly 5 miles. 1 hr of jump rope at HR 135 equals 5 miles of base pace.

My trend of illness just keeps on keeping on…this has been an awful training block. Can barely even call it that. Stomach bug ripping through my house now, spent last night hugging the toilet. Seriously don’t remember the last time I was sick like that. Maybe the worst I’ve ever felt. Managed to drop 7 lbs which could help for my half
shite is comical at this point.

Between the holidays and starting a new job, I have yet to work out in almost 2 weeks. I'm going to feel very crummy on tomorrow night's run

Ran the Wilderness 10 Miler in Saint Francisville, LA over the weekend. Have not been able to train much in December (only 40 miles total for the month) so I did not have high hopes of beating my Golden Fliers time from mid December. Weather was 50 and overcast at the 8:30AM start. Ended up having a better run that I thought I would with the hills and only about 15 seconds slower than the previous race.
Got the LA Half coming up and at this point anything below 2 hours will be a win. I will probably have to sign up for the Zydeco Half and hope to have fewer interruptions in training to get a decent half time to submit for corral placement for WDW Marathon 2026.
The last two morning runs have been cold! It used to not bother me so much in my 30's, but here in my 40's I am not a fan of it.

What do you guys think about treadmills and their conversion to road races? I know it's definitely easier but what is a good estimate for an equivalent treadmill 5k time to a 19:5x road 5k?
