Uh. Hill repeats.

5 mins zone 1. 5 mins zone 2. About 1 mile warmup.
5 hill repeats 1.5 mins zone 5.
5 recoveries 3 mins zone 1.

I have a 1/4 mile hill in my neighborhood with 75ft of climb. Just about perfect for this workout. Been a while since I’ve done these.

I just recently went from 1 workout a week to 2 so that has been difficult to adjust my schedule to but I think I have been able to settle in the 60-65 mile range.

Here’s part of my problem. I go to the gym 5x a week. Running exposed some issues that I have. Primarily, a bad back which created some severe imbalances that impact my performance. Without the gym, no way I could run the way I want to. That’s 30 miles I lose right there. Maybe as I clear this up, I can cut it back…..

Ran a local 8K today. Rained the whole fricking time. I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do race wise so I just picked a comfortable pace and didn’t really get it uncomfortable until the last mile. Getting closer to my 7min/mile target. Didn’t win my age group, but came close.

One more race in Dec (5K) then the half marathon in Feb.

Last three I've run have been free, but with a recommended donation amount.

Hell yes they have. $40+ for a 5k is absurd. What happened to the days when you could run for $15 preregistered or $20 day-of?

Yep, I just paid 40 for a 5K on New Years Day. It’s a bit much.

I usually sign up last minute to most races and pay the extra money so I'm not the best to weigh in here, but yes. I refused a Turkey Trot because it was $60 for a 6 miler. Pretty sure the local Half Marathon has gone from $70 2 years ago to $110 next year.

I’m glad I’m not alone. Paid $40 for a turkey 5k with the stupid online fee. It had been a while so wasn’t sure if I was just that much out of the loop or what.

Just paid $50 for a 10k in February. Was $40 a month or so. They do have a pretty good “swag bag” though, for what that’s worth.

PR'd the NOAC Turkey Day 5 mile race right around 35:00. Think I probably went about 80% as I'm tapering and wanted to take it somewhat easy. Running the RnR San Antonio marathon next Sunday. Had a credit from the canceled RnR NOLA marathon last year so picked this one. Anyone else here running it? Weather's looking fairly warm, unfortunately, but looking forward to it regardless. Ran my first marathon in Birmingham earlier this year with a 3:51 time. Shooting for 3:30 this go round.

Update: Finished the San Antonio Rock n Roll at 3:32. Shaved 18 minutes off of my time in February and finished in 18th out of 149 in the M40-44 group and 124th out of 1,626 overall, so I was pleased with my results. The course was actually very nice. Most of the back half was through the greenway trails in the East Side. Lucked out with the temps as it was cool and overcast with a drizzle from time to time.

Pretty good experience overall but I'm done with the Rock n Rolls. Way too corporate and money grabby. Probably sticking with Half Marathons for 2023. Hoping to get one back in NOLA. I think I heard Ole Man River will bring their Half back next December.

Wow that’s a great result, congrats!

I really wish CHNOLA would bring the Jazz Half back. I never got the chance to run it but seemed like a great route and a good time of year. Sad that NOLA doesn’t have a premier half marathon anymore. I’m planning to run the Big Beach Half at the end of January. Probably do the Laketown 10 miler early January as a tune up race.

Hill repeats again tonight. 6 miles total with 7 repeats at HR 180 in quarter mile intervals. Brutal.

what exactly makes this brutal? its hard for anyone to provide feedback when no real details are provided about your run. but maybe you just want to subtle brag about running hills...

Idk, my runs on Strava usually end up with like 0' to 5' of elevation gain. Hills of any size are pretty brutal to me

Alright, I’m coming to the board again for help. I’m experiencing what I believe to be my first bout of IT band pain. Started feeling pain on the outside of my knee on Monday’s run, but just pushed through it. Ran another 4 miles again on Tuesday, and about a mile in that same pain started up. Decided to just suffer through it again, but I really should’ve stopped because the discomfort actually lasted a little bit post run.

Sooo I started googling symptoms, and it sounds like this is a textbook IT band issue. Pain presenting in the outside of the knee where the it band inserts. I’ve never dealt with this before, and had decided to just take a week off and see if that would help, but the more research I’ve done it seems that time off isn’t really very effective. It appears weak hips, glutes & core (which I most definitely have) are a main cause of this issue, among most running issues from what I gather….

TLDR… I guess I’m asking for Those that have had IT band issues what stretches/excercises did you find that were able to address the issue? Or for just a good bodyweight exercise program for runners generally. I do absolutely zero strength training these days, and it’s something I know I should’ve been doing this whole time.

Clamshells (banded if regular is too easy), fire hydrants, donkey kicks, bicycles, Russian twists, then foam rolling and stretching fixed mine. Do a quick circuit of those after your run 3x a week and you'll see improvement.

I didn't add in strength yet, but single leg work is great for fixing the imbalances that cause stuff like IT band syndrome and runners knee.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on adding tempo work to a long run?

I’m in the middle of a half marathon training block. My long runs are all 10+ miles now. I was doing them all at easy pace between 9:15 and 9:30/mile but had the realization that if I carried on, I’d have no clue if I could sustain my goal pace come race time. Started to add in some tempo work like mile repeats getting down to 7:40 and 8:00 per mile. Also find it helps break up the monotony of long runs.

Is this a good idea in general or am I putting myself in a position to overtrain or get injured? My planned race is 1/29 and my attainable goal pace is 8:00 mile. I think I’m capable of 7:45 but conditions would have to be perfect.

I love doing long tempos. It’s great for training your body to maintain without hitting a wall. And minimizing the wall of you do hit it.

I’d say to just pepper them in once every 3/4 weeks instead of making it a weekly thing, depending on what else you’re getting in workout wise during the week.

We did them (10 mile+ tempos) about once a month or so when I was in college. Carried it over to the athletes I coached with good results. It’s all about balance with your training block for that week though. I’d usually scale back on other workouts a bit weeks I was planning on doing them.
