What do you use to measure heart rate?
I use my Apple Watch. I found it to be very accurate. Years ago I used the Fitbit which was all over the place.
Regarding deaths during marathons, these are quite rare. All of my previous three marathons were large ones with at least 30,000 entrants. One person died I believe from hyponatremia which is low sodium from drinking too much water. Drink electrolyte drinks instead to help prevent this. Another individual died within the first quarter mile of the race. I believe he had a heart attack. Likely not from the run as it happened so early. My point in saying all of this is it’s just not worth it for me to push myself to the brink when I’m never gonna run super fast anyways. I just do it for fitness. It keeps me motivated to run regularly as you can’t just go out there and run a marathon without training.

This was my second time to run the New York City marathon. I first ran it in 2005 finishing in 4:30. I’ve also run the Chicago marathon in 2004 and the Marine Corps marathon in 2006. I would recommend anyone run the New York City Marathon as is it such a fun experience. Incredible crowds cheering you on the entire way. I would also recommend the Marine Corps marathon if you’ve not done it as it’s fantastic to run by the monuments.

Good to see the thread still going strong here. Read back through the last several pages and seems to be lots of strong work.
Hope everyone is doing well

I found my Garmin 745 to be off as far as heart rate goes. All of the zone or heart rate training folks I’ve listened to recommended a heart rate strap for accuracy. I recently switched back to the strap as my run plan is zone based and I feel HR is a more accurate measure than perceived effort.

I would definitely agree with this sentiment for a 5k, 10k or half marathon. however, I don’t think this mentality is necessary for a marathon, as many people come in with the goal of simply finishing, and plenty of people walk a portion of the course.

I can see that. Especially in Majors I guess. Bucket list type experiences. And kballa brought up some good counter points as well. I realize my post may have came across like a dick now, re reading it, haha.

No offense take in any of it, don’t worry. We all run for different reasons. We all approach it differently and have different expectations when it comes to training and race day.

Did a 9 miler today and felt great the whole time. The weather was nice and the wife said "why don't you go for a run while it's cool?" Longest run since I was in college

Nice! Got a nice Tempo in today. 6:45 ish pace. Perfect weather, cloudy and chilly.

Awesome runs guys!
I have a question -- do y'all have any book recommendations, or good websites/forums to check out on running for a novice whose wanting to learn more about the sport/activity? I've ran off and on for the last 8 or so years but it's always been kind of all over the place without any structure, except for this latest cycle where I followed Higdon's Novice plan for the St. Jude Half.
I've really liked following a plan and my goal after the Half is to increase my mileage from ~20mpw, to 30, and eventually 40-50 for a 1:30 HM attempt at next years St. Jude (might be a little ambitious, I'm shooting for a 1:55-2:00 hours this year). Anyway, regardless of time, I'd like to increase mileage but I'd like something to follow as it helps keep me motivated and accountable.

This is a really good book. Jay has some good insights. It’s based around training for a race (Half or Full), but has all of the running nerd stuff discussed as well. I ran a 3:27:00 in my first Full using this book and I don’t think I ran a week over 45 miles. Followed that up with a 1:29:30 Half with this same fitness/approach. Further proof that you don’t need to run high mileage to run a decent race.

This is a great book also.

This one also for the mental side of things. I reference this book in my head at times when I want to give up/slack up in a training run/race.
And anybody training at an older age (I’m 41) should listen to this podcast. Peter Attia has some great stuff for longevity. A good listen for anyone interested in endurance/training at a high level. The Peter Attia Drive is the podcast name. Google Peter Attia, he is an insane human. MD and an Engineer, holds multiple endurance feats, records, open water swims, etc.

There’s a ton of Peter attia content on YouTube as well, including a podcast with Andrew huberman.

I've made the decision to do a road marathon in March. My last road marathon was in Dec 2020, then I switched to trail ultras.
After recently completing my first 100 miler, i'm looking forward to the convenience of just running on roads for a training cycle. no long drives to trailheads or having to worry about roots/rocks. but not looking forward to doing speed work again.
hopefully the roads don't destroy my body.

You ultra baws are some crazy masochistic bastards

lol, it's actually not too brutal on the body as the trails are soft to run on. just gotta nail the in race nutrition.
does anyone have experience with the Zydeco Marathon in Lafayette?

Yep, I’ve run Zydeco the past few years. Good course for BQing from what I understand as it’s pretty flat overall. Any particular questions you got?
