I've never done a marathon but I swear by Daniels Running Formula. You could modify one of his marathon plans and hit your goal easily if you were 16 minutes off with just 3 days a week. His plans focus on 2 days a week of "quality" workouts, one being a long run and the other shorter intervals. The rest of the week is easy running so you can swap in cycling or cross training for those days and you're set.

If you are busy (like we all are) use Jay Johnson's Simple Marathon Training book. It combines strength training before/after runs but they can be done quickly. I used it for my first and had a great experience. I ran the last 10K like my hair was on fire. Felt strong af.

Does it provide for weightlifting as well?

I've read a lot about Daniels. Isn't his longest run in the marathon plan 18 miles?

It wasn't prescribed (other than bodyweight), but I'm sure you could mix it in.

He's got plans that peak higher than that but there are options with the longest run of your training block being 17 miles.

With Jay's plan above I think I did 2-20's and 1-22. Alot better for mental/confidence, IMO.

Yeah the first time you see a 20 mile run is Daniels' 56-70MPW marathon plan. If you're set on getting a 20 or 22 mile run in, I don't think it'd be crazy to peak with that and shift the mileage around to make it work. I can send you a PDF of the book if you want to drop your email.

ETA: even if you end up not using one of his plans, he has sections on adding cross training and lifting that might be interesting to you

Ran a 50k stupidly today. I somehow finished, lots of DNFs. Thirty seconds after crossing the finish, I promptly vomited all over the grass. I never felt that bad after a race.

Luckily, the pretty woman I was running with at the end didn’t see it.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

I've got to back off the squats. My knees are aching since I added them in. I haven't been squatting some ridiculous amount (just my bodyweight), but I have pain I didn't have previously.

After a year long running layoff I am very happy with how much the HIIT , Olympic lifting, and focus on stretching helped.

I feel so much more solid in my core and each stride seems more purposeful...in a weird way I feel much less wobbly.

I still can’t find a plan I like. Jay Johnson’s Simple Marathon Training is good, but involved. I may give it a try.

Another thing, I’ve got to work on my nutrition. For my 20 miler and marathon, I ate two clif bars and a cup of coffee for breakfast and then ate gels throughout the run. I’d like to get a little bit more out of breakfast for the long runs.

Everyone is different but cliff bars have soo much added sugar, feel like that would throw me off. I like whole wheat or Ezekiel bread toast with a healthy peanut butter, honey, and cinnamon before a longer run or race. Could throw in a hard boiled egg for a little protein.

Wow so New Orleans no longer has a flagship half/full option. Lost the Jazz Half and now this.

Anyone looking to do the Louisiana half/ full in BR this January?

that sounds good. I like oatmeal too. Might work some of that in on long run days with some honey and yogurt and/or eggs on the side.

@jordan: Same here…I like to have a bagel with peanut butter the morning of a race. Maybe a banana as well.

@reg: Aiming to do the half again this year. I really like that course. Although with a 2 month old and a 20 month old that could easily change
