G-nug -
some joint pain should be expected 20 miles in. pre planning to take pain med for a race doesn't seem like a good plan. think about couple things. did you have same issue with your 19mile run the week or so before this 20 miler? had you done anything different that week leading up to run? shoe condition? different running surface? try getting to the source of the problem which could simply be acclamation of your body to the distance.
taking ibuprofen during race isn't a no no but there are reasons why races don't provide it. temps, high heart rate, dehydrate, etc can cause issues when you add pain med. seen people eat it like candy at 100 milers and then others take it and get terrible stomach problems. Not advising one way or the other just putting some thoughts about it out there.

6 miles this AM. Paced at 9:20 with an average HR of 170. Still nose breathing. It's getting easier and my pace has picked up. I hope after a month or so that my HR starts coming down. Feet still bothering my a bit. Doing foot exercises along with the Knees Over Toes deal still.

Last few runs have sucked. Coming off a major PR a few weeks ago, but my Legs started feeling heavy as hell and lungs are laboring lately.

Signed up for the Stockholm Marathon in June. Thanks to the fricked up rental car market, traveling to Sweden isn’t that much more expensive than a US trip.

800s & 400s this morning. Good lord it was humid out there. Felt like I was suffocating

I experienced some discomfort on the 19 mile run, which is when I did the math and learned I was well over 350 miles on my current pair of shoes. For my 20 mile run it was my first run in my new $150 shoes that I got at New Balance. Maybe the fact I hadn't broken them in caused some pain. But I usually walk about half a mile after my runs. I had no problem doing so after my 19 mile run, but it was pretty uncomfortable doing it after the 20 miler so I cut the walk short at about 0.3 miles.
I try to do my long runs on paved trails, so cement. Different locations for my 19 and 20 mile runs, but same surface. Temperatures and wind were the same.

I've been running Higdon's intermediate base training plan for a couple of weeks and I can already feel the IT band syndrome popping up. Gotta get some pre-hab in before it takes me out again

Anyone ever run in snow/ice? Training plan has a 16 mile run that I have scheduled for tomorrow... snow and ice all over the place right now, which isn't going anywhere as the temps aren't projected to go above freezing until tomorrow afternoon. Have to do it tomorrow as I am going to be traveling all day Saturday/Sunday.

Maybe confirmation bias for me, but I am convinced Higdon is either a recipe for overuse injuries, or wherever you think you are take a step back from his plans.
Myself and a few others I train with have all wound up with some kind of injury about mid way through a Higdon training program

That's fair. Full disclosure, I've been fighting ITBS since college so it's probably not necessarily the Higdon plan that's to blame. Regardless, I've dropped the mileage and intensity a little bit to make sure I'm easing my way into fitness.

Just did my 16 mile run in 28 degree weather on my usual riverside trails... it sucked
Snow and ice still all over, hidden puddles abound. My shoes were soaked from the get go after stepping in a puddle, and grinding out the entire 16 miles with soaking ice cold wet heavy socks and shoes was not fun. Mile 15 I misjudged the ice on the path and ate it, fortunately no one else was out running so no one saw but it was a tumble. Each time I felt my shoes were drying/airing out a bit, I'd step in another hidden puddle and they would be re-soaked all over again.
Pace was 9:08 which is nearly 30 seconds slower than my 20 mile run last week. Not really going to be hard on myself considering the wet shoes and having to navigate around snow and ice the entire time.

Running in my first race since high school tomorrow— the Rock n Roll half in Nola. Anyone mind sharing some do’s/dont’s that a first-time racer should know?
My watch is saying I can run a 1:48 half and I think that’s pretty accurate. I’ve trained since October and my goal had been 1:45, but COVID around Christmas knocked me out of running for a few weeks. Now my goal is just to break 1:50. I ran a 13 mile long run last Saturday and it went really well (although I was pretty sore for a couple of days afterwards). Any pacing tips?

I've never run a half, but make sure you don't go out too fast. It's going to feel easier than you expect it to the first few miles. Don't let the adrenaline get you.
Knocked out 6 miles today at 8:56/mi pace. Longest run since college. My knee felt a little off due to that ITBS I have lingering, so I stopped twice during the run to stretch and that seemed to help.

Are there official pacers at the race? Big races usually have people running with signs of a particular pace. Maybe every 15 minutes apart. Find the one you want to chase and don't fall behind the slower one.

I'm trying my best to get miles outside but this weather isn't helping. 5 miles at 9:12 pace with the wind chill at 5°. Major parts of sidewalks still not clear of snow.

My hands freeze when it’s 40 degrees. I don’t know how you can run that cold.

Two pairs of gloves. Inside pair are stretchy & for warmth. Outside pair is the windproof layer. This combination took me a while to figure out, and the windproof ones left my hands cold while the insulated pair also left my hands cold.
Today was capilene bottoms with running shorts on top, long-sleeve top with active fleece 1/4 zip over it, gloves setup, and a hat mostly to cover the ears.

7.5 miles in Denver today. Took me a couple miles to adjust to the altitude. But finished at a 8:20 pace so not bad.
