My weekend mileage is ramping up. I have a slow 14 miler planned on Saturday. Is it a good idea to toss in a few marathon pace miles at the end of my long runs just to test my legs? I'm thinking 14 miles total with the first nine at 9:54 and the last five at MP (9:09 or so). This was not called for in my plan, but I do not want to bonk.

quote:

My goal pace for both of the half marathons I ran was 9:09, but I ran them both faster than that. The last one I ran was I think at 8:37 or somewhere around there.

For this reason, I'm thinking about lowering my pace goal throughout my training in the hopes if I struggle on raceday, I can still beat my goal time (4 hours even).

Following up, run bros

Good luck on Sunday. I just had a barrage of Facebook memories from two years ago. Family and I can't wait to go back next year.

Easy 6 this morning at 9:54/mi. Good HR average of 144. Felt great out there!

Todays workout didn’t feel great. It was 800s and 600s at 3k to 5k pace. I did all but one right in the range, but I walked a lot of the recovery. This will be my last hard workout of this training block. Hopefully I can break 18 for 5k after a short taper.

I had a good tempo run this morning. The run was 1 easy, 5 at 8:28, and 1 easy.

1 - 10:17
2 - 8:20
3 - 8:24
4 - 8:18
5 - 8:24
6 - 8:23
7 - 10:19

I have the longest run of my life on Saturday. It's 14 miles with the first 9 at 9:54 and the final 5 at MP (9:09). The weather is supposed to be perfect!

That's currently my longest also. I'm about to start bumping it up a half mile a week though.

That last mile must have felt slow as hell.

It was not too bad. Every mile feels good when it’s 52 degrees with a light north wind and the sun is coming up over the horizon

T-alley

like the progress!
suggestion for you to consider for your long run. sandwich those marathon pace miles in the middle tempo-ish style. I think it will give you a better feel on your current fitness to hit your goal pace for full distance. to me its much easier to run slow and then finish faster than it is to run slow, go faster but then still have some slower miles to knock out.

just a thought

Did some light speed work Wednesday. Had a few 30 sec repeats at mile pace. I looked down to check my pace and saw 6:15.

At that moment I had a vision straight out of The Winter Soldier where you and Burt run by just saying "On your left".

Thanks for the suggestion, ks, but I'm a little confused. Are you suggesting I put the five MP miles in the middle my 14 or finishw with them? It appears you advocate for both in your post:

Do the latter. Run 10 slow finish with 5 at pace. It’s called the 3/1 or 4/1 rule depending how much you do. But basically every few weeks it’s helpful to incorporate marathon pace into your lung runs at the end to test your legs at the end of the run. For every 3 or 4 miles you did slow, do 1 fast. So if it’s a 16 mile run, do 3/1 and do the last 4 at pace.

3rd OA this morning at the Screaming Monkey 25k. 2:31.

Held 2nd the entire race behind my good friend until 13.5 when my left quad locked up. Just had to bust through it for 2 miles but got passed by one baw and he got me by 57 seconds.

Great race, definitely the hardest I have pushed in a while.

You did awesome man! Hoping for a similar time here in Houston in a couple months. Obviously my favorite part was 1st ave coming off the bridge but the support in Brooklyn was awesome.

Thanks dude!

It’s incredible to hear the crowd noise coming off Queensboro into Manhattan. Brooklyn showed up. Honestly Bronx support was way better than I thought. I got some orange slices, a banana, and a Gatorade from just like random people handing them out up there. Awesome.

Quail, great job! I'm super impressed with your race. It looks like you had a really good half marathon time in there as well!
