Made the mistake of running 6 miles at lunch yesterday. 700ft of elevation change which is basically one hill at the start and finish. Thought I was gonna die coming up that hill at mile 5. Guess it's early AM runs from here on out.

In the end, the excuses (humidity, poor nutrition) do not matter one bit but today's last two miles were an average of 12:25 , my worst effort since 2018.

To look at the positive, I focused on form and managed to not give in. Mental progress for me here because I wanted to quit at 4/8 and tried to talk myself into it.

A slow arse shuffle was better than giving up and the old me would have quit.

I, too, really struggled with the heat today. I am ashamed to admit I didn’t run 9 and stopped at a 10K instead. The last 1.2 I ran was slooooooow. I was lightheaded before I slowed down.

No more IPAs and buttery filet mignons on Fridays. Gotta get some carbs and rest. I also have to start running earlier.

I also need to start running earlier.

Don’t think I’ll be running over about 12 at a time for the rest of the summer.

The wind is pretty stiff out of the south today. It just moves all the exceedingly humid Gulf air and situates it on us.

I got out the door a little later than I planned to today, but still ran 13.1. Finished under 2 hours, which was my goal, at 1:56 and I'm happy. I mostly kept consistent splits until the last two miles which get a bit hilly. And I remembered to eat something before going out.

To everyone who posts and reads this thread, I wish you all a happy and healthy Memorial Day weekend.

4 miles this morning. Got an extra mile more than I planned. 11:00 pace with a little bit of walking toward the end. Felt great.

Question for you guys that also lift weights, especially heavy: What kind of program are you running? I’m currently doing the 5/3/1 BBB 90 day challenge and it’s too much for me with adding in running. I’m thinking about doing the Boring But Strong to lessen the overall volume but continue strength training.

I got murdered by the humidity today.

I drank almost no water yesterday because we were replacing a fridge and I just didn’t think to drink tap water.

It was my first unbearable run of the year.

I mean, the humidity is a pretty damn good excuse this time of year. The important thing is that you got your miles in safely

Did 16 w/10 at marathon pace this morning and started questioning my sanity after the sun came up. Couple of questions for the group:

1. What’s the group’s threshold for fueling during long runs? I’ve never really bothered but haven’t done a lot of training runs over 13
2. On runs with large portions at marathon/faster pace, how do you all structure them? Ive just been running them starting after a mile or two, but the last few miles turn into kind of a death march this time of the year

I plan a gel for every 50-60 minutes if I'm doing 12+ miles. I also start and end my runs at home. Others may plan for something different.

First mile is my warm-up. Everything else I hope is my marathon pace. Can't help you for the last couple of miles other than just power through it.

I carry a hand held water bottle and take a gu every 45 minutes on long runs. If you are staying close to home, maybe set up an aid station and circle back when you need to.

Marathon pace I usually do 1.5 mile warm up/cool down.

Thanks guys. That’s helpful.

Will probably try to work in some gels on my upcoming 20 mile runs.

Sounds like I should probably just suck it up on my marathon pace runs.

Got 14 in this morning. Left at 4:30 due to all the heat talk from yesterday, so it was only 72 but there was still 90% humidity by the time I finished.

I’m really enjoying the fueling insights. I can barely stomach the bars and gels I’ve tried, but I’ll keep on experimenting.

12 this am; 30 for the week. I’m happy with anything above 25 mpw in this holding phase.

Try some Maurteen gels. Expensive, but really the only ones I can stomach mid run, sans water. Easy on the gullet/stomach.

11 yesterday, wanted to do a half but I knew after 5 that I didn’t have it and was going to end early. A little over 4 this morning and legs feel tired. 32 for the week and I need a rest day.

Do you go with the caffeinated or the regular Maurten gels? Is the best place to buy them directly from their site?

Legs were stiff at first, but I was pretty much in flow mode after 5-6. Wish I coulda got 14-15, but wanted to get home and take over daddy duties so my wife could get her miles in before it got too hot. “See I’m not all that selfish when it comes to running, now am I darlin’” Haha
