How is this a decision?

This. Close-proximity post-run beer beacons.

Ouch! Road 5K in July in Houston?
If it is a 7am start, it'd be no problem.

GetCocky,
It will be 7:30 so most people will be done by 8.
The summer running really helped me last year...the 1st 45 degree day I felt invincible and set a PR. Hoping for the same this year.

Put in 6 miles this afternoon at a 9:40 pace. Ended at my wife and I’s favorite beer place for dinner and beers. 1000ft of elevation change and tons of heat/humidity. Ate dinner with wife and cooled down with some draft beers. Awesome.

NYC Cancelation is coming soon. I feel it in my plums. They need to cancel before training starts in a few weeks.

Update on the coaching experiment. Recently did an ill advised 5k time trial even though I have a 1:13 half and 16:30 5K barely a month old on the books. I told him I'm not acclimated and not sweating yet. His response "it'll make you tough", which is funny because he really wanted to drop my mileage by 60 percent for my safety. Pick a lane. Anyhow ran a 71 degree wet bulb 17:08 which factors into a 16:37 and for what other than to risk heat stroke? That's some bush league shite right there, lol.

How long you gonna see this through?

Damn Burt, Coach Approval ON [OFF]
I've been enjoying my daily lunch runs. The heat is starting to be an issue but I'm getting a good tan and I don't have to wake up before 5 am to run. I'm really going to hate when I have to go back to the office.

Burt,
I'd like you to be tougher too ...I'll need you to run 27 miles , as fast as you can, tomorrow with no water. You can Venmo me his June coaching fee. If you don't cramp, run 3 more.
Someone else can make you do something odd in July ...we can crowdsource your demise.

I’m going to give him till fall racing season. This year’s a wash might as well see it through. Otherwise might go back to coaching myself after. Like I said before, coaching seems to best fit the beginning runner and the elite runner. I’m already motivated I don’t need someone to tell me to “get tough”.

One of the top Birmingham area coaches told me in our free consultation meeting that anyone who can research and follow a basic racing plan doesn’t need a coach. You pay for motivation, access to other runners, community, and perhaps some pointers on how to adjust a racing plan when something happens (injury, work, etc).
I appreciated his honesty and decided to not get a coach.

I mean yes, you can pick a plan and follow it, but whether you can adapt it to maximize your potential is completely different. Those points sound more like what you get from a Running Group, rather than a Running Coach.

Burt, let me know when you want me to come up with some torture for you.

You don't NEED a coach to be successful if you have a ton of knowledge and experience. Most people without a coach don't have that though. If I had the financial means or if I were a higher level competitor, I would definitely hire a coach.

I found a run coach. I'm a novice runner and had used the various plans I found online and in books. However, I wasn't progressing and had nagging injuries. The guy I got was very reasonable: $80 for three months of planning. He lays out my schedule on that VDOT app and I put in my mileage and times. He answers any questions I may have and gives me pointers. I thought it was pretty cheap compared to the Lifetime membership which was $80/month.
