3 awful treadmill miles in a slow 27:08. My slowest run yet (by far), but still below my goal pace (9:09/mi and a 2:00:00 half marathon).

Shin splints on my left leg are killing me. I hate treadmills.

5 miles Saturday outdoors as the Good Lawd intended.

Sidebar: Has anyone here ever ran a triathlon, regardless of distance? Been thinking about training for a sprint triathlon (1000 yard swim, 18 mile bike, 4 mile run) in May after I run the half marathon in March. Would appreciate any information you can provide, specifically as to training (particularly regarding swimming), your experience, whether it enhanced your fitness level, whether it helped your distance running, etc.

Hell yeah. Never met a tangent I didn’t like... especially in a race. It amazes me when I see people hugging the outside for entire races.

3.15 cold n rainy miles today at a pretty meh 8:32 pace. Got a 5k this weekend and hoping to finish around 23 mins. 18 miles so far this week. My usual pace is around 7:30 so I know ill have to shave a few secs off that this weekend.

January is going well so far. On pace for about 85 miles this month, which would get me to 1000 for the year if I kept it up but no way I will. Some injury will knock me out a month or two, and summers in our S. LA climate demand cross training. Still, happy with my start. Planning a 5k in about 10 days. I won my age group in it 4 years ago, but based on last year results in my current age group that is unlikely.

Last couple times out, I’ve had an issue. The first mile or so are hard. I feel uncomfortable. Breathing is rapid and heart rate feels elevated, but isn’t (heart rate monitor).

Anyway, after about 1.5 miles, everything is fine. Any ideas?

In a vacuum, sounds like it takes you 1.5 miles to warm up. Unless it has been much colder where you are lately, couldn’t guess at a reason for the sudden change.

I go through something similar. Distance of shittiness is highly variable depending upon how much/hard I’ve been running and how I’m doing generally w/sleep, stress, etc.

Been noticing that uptick man. Looking good. 5K is next weekend? NOLA? What time are you targeting? I’m thinking I may jump in a race soon, but keep it super light.

Had 3 sub 20’s in ‘19 and I’m coming to the grips with the fact that that may never happen again after what happened to me end of last year. Trying to just get back to enjoying running without pushing it and keeping the speed work to pretty much a bare minimum at this point. Maybe I’ll get back to it, maybe I won’t.

Went back to work this week (hence the 2:30 am post), so trying to (re) balance the family, work, training dynamic. I see it as another milestone. While sitting at home getting full pay for 4 months was nice at times; it’s nothing I’d ever want to replicate! Haha

Alot of new faces in the Strava group; I assume from this thread. That’s awesome. Any newcomers care to share your initials? No stalker, but I enjoy matching the runner with the posts. If not, I understand, and some are a given by user name. Mine are JG FWIW.

Good luck with your race this weekend. Are you running the Spirits 5K? If so I’ll be running it too. I was shooting for sub 20 but a recent bout of the flu has me questioning if I’ll even be competitive.

Yes. It's the spirits 5k. I followed you on Strava. After seeing your runs I'm pretty sure we live in the same neighborhood. Not to sound stalker ish or anything. Lol. My good friend Billy is hosting the spirits 5k. Him and I do the trails every weekend.

Sub 20 would be awesome. I'm a fairly new runner . I was doing good just to be able to run a 5k about a year ago. If I'm around 23mins I'll be happy. Would def like to improve though.

That was pretty easy to figure out by your weekly mileage and average pace.

This. I've also noticed that sometimes it takes a couple of days to feel the full effects of a hard or long workout. As I have posted before, I find that a lot of runners, especially newer runners, spend a lot of time running in zones 3 and 4 when they think they are running easy. That will catch up to you eventually. Those are all things to consider if you find yourself feeling exhausted, heavy, dealing with nagging injuries, or getting burned out.

Try some strides (4-5, 30-40 yds @ 80% effort) before heading out. I do this for my real early runs to wake myself up and get a rhythm. It could help.

Run on the Bayou 5k on Feb 1 in NOLA (Best Bank). Expecting something in the high 22 minute range. Was toying with doing the 10k and then a half marathon sometime soon, but probably more prudent to stick to the shorter stuff. There are some nice 5k races lined up in NOLA in the spring, so I can get in 4-5 of them and work on my time.

Keep being patient with your recovery, TigeRoots! You are doing awesome.

Curious what you’re using for HR monitoring? Wrist based or strap? I’ve always been wrist based (which I realize is pretty much useless), but ordered a strap today. Just wanting to be more accurate with it these days. I find that wind really affect my wrist based (to the high side), even when I’m keeping the same “feel”.

Just curious if it’s the extra turbulence between the sensor and my wrist or if it’s actual added effort due to wind causing my HR to rise. Even though my breathing/exertion seem even keel.

I used to use a strap. My new watch has a wrist monitor. I have been using it. It seems to work as well as the strap. The technology for the wrist monitors has improved a lot. When it has been off it has been in the same spots as where my strap would be off before, so it appears to be interference from external electrical signals.

Interesting. I'll keep that in mind. It's stays pretty windy here in Kansas. My HR almost always is higher in high winds with gusts just as a result of the increased effort it takes to maintain a steady pace. That might be what you were noticing as well. Since it is winter, and I'm always wearing a jacket right now, I will try comparing the readings while covered and uncovered by my sleeve the next time it is windy.

That's me. I typically just go out and run at a pace that feels good but I find that the majority of my runs end up being in zones 3 & 4. I know I'll get my heart rate down the more distance I add, but I'm still building up a good sweat in 30° weather while only wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
