I use races to get faster. If I'm doing two speed sessions during the week, I'll cut one out after a race. 10K and up I'll skip all speed work for the following week. I'm an old guy though. Young guys recover faster.

Well considering I'm old, slow, and still fat I'll take your advice and flex some workouts around.

Thanks for the help.

Took you baws advice and got fitted for some Brooks. Definitely had shin splints so I’m hoping to foam roll and ice them this week and get back to it soon

Which model you roll with?

I’ve liked all my brooks.

TBH I’ve been happy with all my Brooks, NB, Saucony, and Adidas shoes.

Only one pair of my Skechers and Nikes have been disappointing in the last few years.

My first mid day long run in the heat so far this year. Hit 12 along the Lakes. The days of mid day long runs at 135-140 BPM are once again gone for now.

That said, got my personalized Daniels’ Plan in today for the Jazz Half in October. Plan starts 6/17. Hooray, Half Marathon training in the Summer!

I follow you on Strava and I saw you went sub 20 and sub 40.

I don't know where I'm at but if I guess I would think I could go sub 21 but I really want to get to sub 20 and then sub 40. I have probably shaved off a minute and a half in the past 3 months (not official) but just potential.

I'm using your body of work as a benchmark.

Went sub 20 but not 40. Finished the Crescent City Classic in 41:03. I’m still shooting for 40 too. I take it you’re in our group on Strava?

I had a hot one yesterday. 88 with some humidity. We’re supposed to get rain all week so there was a lot of cloud cover this afternoon on a run.

Not a major accomplishment but I got a Strava KOM and set a .5 mile PR of 2:59. I’m not going to say I wasn’t trying because I was obviously moving. I don’t think I’ve ever gone out and tried to set a half mile PR and those were in my squishy shoes so I’m pretty sure I can do better.

Haven’t tried those. I’ve tried the Launch, Ghost, Glycerine, and Revana.

I think they’re a good mix of cushion and speed right?

Speaking of I wonder if Burt got his damn Launches.

1:30-1:35. Would love to hit 1:30. Current PR is 1:41.

Based on your times, I'd think you could nail 1:30 (assuming conditions are decent). 7 minute miles puts you just under 1:32, and I think you should be able to beat that with a summer full of training in the heat and humidity with a nice cool October morning.

Yeah, I got my Launches. I think it’s hilarious that Brooks calls all its shoes these incredible, fast names despite them all being super heavy. These are the lightest they got and they’re pretty good but nothing special. It’s nice to run in a pair of shoes that isn’t trying to passively kill me. Brooks be like “okay, we got this new design that weighs as much as a gold brick; our lightest shoe evah! We shall call it the Launch Interceptor Falcon Puncher at a scant 22.5 ounces a piece”

I, like everyone else on the planet, got tricked into to buying those fricking Nike Epic Reacts because it was the first shoe they launched with a new proprietary foam so we all assumed they’d put it in a running shoe. Joke’s on us. Having to break in a flyknit is the dumbest fricking thing ever and hell yeah I’m mad.

Damn Burt. Someone at Brooks touch you inappropriately? I agree with most of what you say. Although I have a couple of pairs, I'm just not cut out to run in Brooks consistently. One of my running buddies is a bit of a Brooks fanboy, but he's around 185 lbs, and runs even slower than me (as hard as that is to believe). The couple pairs of Brooks I run in felt like they took 60-70 plus miles to break in. Just not a huge fan like a couple guys here... Looking at you 3nOut.

Nah, Brooks is solid. Nike’s got me worked up though. I’d imagine since most runners are in the Clydesdale/Athena class now, Brooks would be the go to shoe because they can carry the weight so to speak.

WTF?

I run in brooks, saucony, ASICS, Skechers, and New Balance. I’m an equal opportunity fan boy.

NB is actually my favorite brand.

Now that being said, I think that brooks DNA cushion is better for a fatty like me and new runners than others.

I’d happily buy another pair of ghosts again but a pair of Sauconys replaced them as my main trainer and I’ve been happy.

ETA: I think outside of the cushion, brooks are not an overly fast shoe. That’s probably Burt’s legit complaint.
