Hey guys what do you think is an acceptable amount of time to knock 2-2.5 minutes off a 10k pace. I’m in great cardio shape but do the bulk of my cardio at the gym and not actually running. i’d like to get my pace to the upper 7’s for the CCC in late April. I’m trying to put together a plan that adds more actual running.

What’s your pace now?

And are you doing 0 mileage?

My average pace over a 10k was right about 10 using last years CCC time. Shorter runs are about 9. i’ve definitely improved since then (atleast 30 pounds lighter). i run a few miles a week as part of my training but it’s more speed work, probably averages a mile or two per session broken up into multiple 1/10 mile laps and sprints.

What's your normal running pace? Are you within 20ish seconds of a 7:50/pace? How often & how many miles per week do you run? Do you have experience running a 10k distance?

I'd say you could start a plan 8-10 weeks before the race to make sure you hit your goal.

i’ve run dozens of 10k’s best time was right about 50 minutes but that was atleast 6 or 7 years ago. Last year at the CCC i was right about an hour but that was right when i started getting back in shape. i would like to get to around 46 minutes.

I think it’s doable, 7:50 is pretty quick though in general. Will need to start increasing your mileage though now though. Should take off around 45 seconds a mile just from the weight loss alone.

There's a lot of factors like starting with age, weight, current conditioning. Like hogbody mentioned, eating right and the loss of a mere 5 pounds can lead to better times.

I think the biggest challenge is how to increase speed from couch to PR with 2 months of training without causing injury. It's doable running 5/6 days a week and mixing it up with tempo runs, speed work, and easy long runs if you can already run a 10k no problem.

I’ve yet to have an injury that sidelined me in 2 years of running

Hope it gets better.

All the gomeb razor talk got me hyped to go balls out to try and PR a mile.

6:26. Not blazing compared to some but that’s the fastest Strava has me at. I’m pretty sure under no wind and no hills (not what I had today) I could get that to 6.

Very nice. You've really picked up the pace on your runs this year. My 12 yr old son runs the mile and 3200m for his school, and keeps talking trash about his PR being faster than my Strava PR. I'm about to hit a track and put this little shite in his place. Just hope he doesn't get so pissed that he doesn't help his ol' man off the ground and into my car afterwards.

Thanks!

I’ve really been trying to keep my miles under 8 this year unless I’m bumming it on purpose.

I can’t get faster on trails if I keep running 8:20s in the streets so I’ve been trying to sustain those longer. Today was a sub 7 mile to start, mile and a half easy effort and mile sprint back.

I hear you on the kids. I have run a few 5ks and 10ks with my 9 year old and that little shite has passed me when I was looking back to check on him at the finish a time or two with a shite eating grin on his face.

Last 5k I smoked him the last quarter mile just make sure he knows.
