I’m seeing more people talk about this. Is this really legitimate? If so, how much should someone take, and when should they take it? Is there a particular type of magnesium I should get? I would appreciate what ever information anyone can provide.

I don’t think it’s a sleep supplement like melatonin or anything, but low Mg levels are proposed to be linked to age related poor sleep.

If you take Vitamin D (I do because I don’t get direct sunlight 8 months of the year) then you might need to supplement Mg at the same time to improve Vit D absorption and help keep Ca available (so you don’t get hardening of arteries). Zn also is needed for the activities of VitD after it’s absorbed, so I take that one with vitamin D too.

I’ve not noticed improved sleep specifically from any supplement; cutting back on alcohol seems to be the trick to better sleep for me.

Nothing is legitimate or works that good. I think the best thing science has come up with as far as sleep aids for men go is tallboys

If you’re a lady they have this stuff called ambien

Magnesium helps with muscle relaxation more than actual sleep. So if your muscles are relaxed, it should help you sleep better is the thinking.

You could combine with melatonin.

I take 500mg Nature’s Bounty early evening. Not necessarily for sleep but it’s a natural relaxant. Can give you the squirts if you take too much. Exercise is the best thing for sleep.

I can't speak on helping with sleep, but chances are you're deficient in magnesium anyway. Take a quality ZMA supplement because you're also deficient in zinc.

Once did experiment involving magnesium in chem lab in college. Scary to think about that bright flame in context of its consumption. Bet it could put you to sleep, deep deep sleep.

Kidding

Exercise, eating / hydrating well, sunlight…not getting sleep good enough?

I take 800mg of magnesium glycinate every night with my 20mg of melatonin. It works for me and I honestly don’t get muscle cramps and spasms like I used to. I don’t know if there is any correlation but it’s anecdotal. I think that is beyond the recommended dosage for both and I’m no doctor.

I wouldn't classify it as a sleep aid, but magnesium at ~400 mg dosage does have a calming, relaxing effect that helps me get to sleep if I'm tired anyway. You know that feeling of being tired, but you can't let go enough to really relax - that's when it helps me. Sure you can do the same with bourbon but that's another thread. Magnesium can also be a stool softener too so watch how much you take.

Magnesium also has some efficacy for migraines.

I'm not sure, but I'd bet that's tied to the muscle relaxant effect.

It’s magical for tension headaches. And muscle pain in general.

I’ve used it to aid in sleep in the past and it’s purely from a muscle relaxer standpoint.

ETA: I use glycinate. It doesn’t cause the bowel/stomach issues that other forms might.

Mag Threonate “Magmind” is my go to for sleep.

There’s supposed to be a range of mental health benefits, but Mag Threonate gives me incredible dreams.

I also take Glycinate for the muscle benefits.

Many people are mag deficient. It certainly can have a sleep improvement calming affect as mentioned. I prescribe it a fair but as part of headache and migraine treatment due to the positive response.

I typically use 400-600mg of mag oxide daily/nightly. There can be some transitory loose stools upon initiating therapy for the first couple of weeks but most of the time it settles put after that.

Took this for the first time last night, and maybe I was just tired, but I slept like a rock.

I don’t take a daily multivitamin but started taking a Zinc/Magnesium/Calcium about a year ago, usually at dinner. Maybe a slight improvement in sleep.

Also recently ramped up to 50mg Melatonin per that other thread. Definitely feeling an overall deeper sleep with more dreams.

Zinc/Magnesium/Calcium

Magnesium and calcium in supplements should not be taken together because the absorption of the two minerals can cancel each other out. It is best if the minerals are taken at different times, for example, one mineral in the morning and one in the evening.
