quote:What do you disagree with? Sugar causes cholesterol to go up. Oatmeal and fruit are basically pure sugar. Ingested cholesterol does not cause blood cholesterol to go up. I don't know what else to tell you. Believing the opposite is simply wrong. (Did you not notice your boy 777 saying the same thing?)
Yeah, I've read some of your other posts, and you and I are not going to agree, at all, on this aspect of it.

The argument you were having with that AtM guy. Plant based etc. I am not going to argue with you.

Im 32, good health, but my HDL was a 21. My lunch everyday was white bread peanut butter sandwich, pringles, and 3 chips ahoy cookies, coke zero.
Switched to whole wheat peanut butter sandwich, small side salad(cheese, sunflower seeds, craisans, 1 serving size of ranch) almonds and granny smith apple, water.
Started running 5k three times a week(9.3 miles total)
6 months later my HDL was 53. All other levels were great. Dark green vegetables, nuts, fiber filled fruits were the best from what I researched online.

BTW, this was your OP:
So you've asked for input, then rejected input out of hand because you already disagree with it?
My answer to you comes from lived experience: ever since I switched to a mostly protein and fat diet, my blood work has become close to impeccable. That includes my HDL skyrocketing and my triglyercides plummeting (as well as all markers of inflammation/insulin resistance going into the cellar.)
I actually had your mindset several years ago when I went in for some bloodwork after thinking I had "eaten clean" and came out with disappointing numbers. My doc at the time asked me to come back in 3 weeks for a re-test, during which I had copious amounts of bran cereal with skim milk. When those numbers were EVEN WORSE, I barely even knew what to do with the cognitive dissonance.
Remember: just because voices of authority have said one thing your entire life does not mean they know what the frick they are talking about.

So, what are the do not eats, and what do I eat more of? Would rather hear things from people here that have experienced this

Just came in:
LIPID PANEL
H CHOLESTEROL 217 MG/DL <200
TRIGLYCERIDES 65 MG/DL <150
HDL CHOLESTEROL 58 MG/DL >39
H CALC LDL CHOL 146 MG/DL <100
RISK RATIO LDL/HDL 2.52 RATIO <3.55
shite, I don't know if that formatted right.

IMO, the proper ratio to focus on is your Tri:HDL. Yours is 1.12...which is excellent, BTW. Anything below 2 is good. I'd predict that insulin resistance and small LDL particles are not present (things you can measure directly if you choose to have more in-depth blood work.)
Looking at this, it's hard to see why your doc even said anything to you about this.

Glad you posted about Dave Feldman, his stuff on how transient cholesterol numbers are is eye opening.
I causally follow his work. He has the best guess so far out of what I've seen out there that agrees with what we "know" about cholesterol and the basic functions.
Last I heard he was working on if he could narrow or widen his arterial walls via diet through constant screenings. I need to go read more into it.

Like scrub said, not bad. I would still like to see hdl raised some for leak health but not bad and very similar to my last check up which my doctor praised me.
With that in mind, here is what I would do. Don't go extreme on any one thing but look at the following
Cut back any processed food to 1 cheat meal of 3 hour eating window a week.nusually Saturday night.
If you lift weights, I would have carbs after your 3rd day of your week, for most this would be Wednesday. Keep this to sweet potatoes, potatoes, maybe a little oatmeal and some berries or kiwis or oranges. Keep this to a 2-3 hour or so window too.
Other than that, green veggies and fattier meat.
For supplements mega dose the fish oil. Wouldn't even worry about the other supplements unless you want to take them, they are kind of overkill in your situation.

Here's my story. I've been a pescetarian for 30 years. I eat fish once or twice a week and am a lacto vegetarian the rest of the time. But my wife switched me from margarine to real butter and I ate a lot of cheese. My cholesterol spiked and my doctor watnted to put me on lipitor which I wasn't going to do. I cut out all cheese and butter except either a pizza or cheese enchilada or other cheesy meal on the weekend. I also started eating an avocado sandwich instead of cheese sandwich for lunch and eat a half cup of steelcut oats at breakfast. I've always worked out and that didn't change. I ride my bike twice a week for 30-40 miles and swim a coached workout of 3000 meters or so 3 times a week. I am naturally thin but always had 10-15 extra pounds. After changing my diet the fat melted off and I have a 4 pack verging on a 6pack. Cholesterol is all good now too.

Sounds miserable.

I dont know what they started at because my first screening was a simple wellness one at work and did not get tris.
With my full check at the Dr. office, my tris were a 55. When in high school I took an acne med that required blood work each month and they were always in the 250's but that may have been due to the medicine.
To the OP, HDL level is supposed to be above 50 per my wellness group at work.

How bad are smoothies? I am talking no sugar or honey, just frozen fruit(bananas/strawberries/blueberries, almond milk and whey protein).
