Just had my first check up in a long time. Over 50 years old. I don't know the numbers yet, but the Dr. said "Slightly elevated" and wants me to use diet to control. So, what are the do not eats, and what do I eat more of? Would rather hear things from people here that have experienced this than just a plain google search.

Eat real food. Dietary fat does not raise cholesterol, but eating processed junk can certainly swing the hdl/ldl ratio in the wrong direction.

first step is getting rid of processed foods amd preservatives in general. Make a small first step. (think whole 30 type diet)

from the you can adjust arse needed. Ultimate diet for cholesterol is going to be one that is a minimum of 2:1 in omega 6 to omega 3. balancing that is even better. Its going to be a diet that is similar to the following

Calories- bw*10-12
Protein- 25-35%
Fat-50-70%
Carbs- 5-15%

carbs from grean veggies to start adding in certain starchy veggies and fruits after you have been on a while. Add roots like potatoes slowly and infrequent after you have corrected the issue. if you want bread ezkel bread is best but this should be limited and added after being on 12+ weeks.

protein- use free range eggs,
beef(grass fed is better),
uncured bacon and pork tenderloins (organic free range is best),
seafood( wild caught is best),
fatty fish(wild caught is best),
lamb,
bison
free range chickens/turkey

fats-
grass fed butter/brown butter/ghee
avaocados
avocado oil
macadamia nuts
EVOO

so in essensce, you eat foods you can kill or pick in theier natural state. From there start eliminating carbs sources and onld adding them back in after you have gotten it under control and even then only slowly and infrequent.

second part of the equation is fasting. Nothing will get your cholesterol under control faster than fasting. I suggest starting with 16:8 IF for a while. After you are used to that start doing 20:4 EOD slowly going to one meal a day EOD. Eventually over the course of 405 weeks move to do two 36 hour fast a week. Then move to make those fast, dry fast.

If doing the 36hour fasting, of course you can add some calories on days you eat.

does not effect real ldl levels. Sometimes it will show raised ldl levels, but if you look at the nano particle size, the bad ldl is not raised.

also beef is much better for you than chicken due to omega 6 to 3 ratio.

cholesterol is a repsonse to inflamation in the body. Main reason our bodies become inflamed under normal circumstances is due to the omega 6 to 3 ratio. You should strive for balance there or as close as you can.

Also supplements

take the following

Fish oil- find a very high quality source from wild caught fish and make sure it comes in a non clear container. Mega dose the shite out of this. I.E. 15-20g of DHA if you can afford it. Krill oil is another good alternative.

Red yeast rice- natural mild statin

cumin-
ubiquinol
arjuna

all three help to stop any calcification of the arteries.

just remember, for 90% of people that can fix cholesterol through diet(honestly overall cholesterol is not important, resting blood sugar, hdl and triglicerides are) its as simple as controlling blood sugar and balancing out omega 6 to 3.

total cholesterol in a lot of ways is meaningless. much much better test out there, besides the ones mentioned above, calcification of the arteries is the big thing to watch.

once you get your cholesterol in check and health markers are great add the carbs slowly. don't over do it on that. You don't have too even do it at all.

As far as a cheal day or meal, do one meal every 2 weeks if you have to have it.

Damn that fat % is high, I guess that’s the trend nowadays though. Is this how you eat and do crossfit?

I’m likely the opposite.
35% P
40% C
25% F

he asked about correcting cholestrol with diet not about performance. Controlling inflamation is key and you do that similar to the above I posted.

yours would be a better approach to performance for most people.

and neither has anything to do with crossfit.

yea i mean this isn' what i would prescribe somebody trying to just lose weight(even though its great for that) nor would i for somebody looking to have great performance or build muscle, but for what he is looking to do, its about perfect and if anything its on the lower end of where he needs to be.

Listen to lsu777

Dave Feldman has very good information out there if you care to read. He has found that cholesterol numbers change daily as it is an energy transport system (makes sense).

It’s interesting you talk about the 1 meal a day and 2- 36 hour fast/ week. That’s exactly how I feed my dog on a raw diet, 3 days on with 1 meal a day and 2 fast a week.

I’ve contemplated doing it myself but for the mean time I love food too much to try lol

well 72 hour fast are optimal for health. Most people can't do that and especially not dry fasting which is the healthiest so long as you take in the kidney shots(google it).

So ketogenic based diets if done right fix many of your issue with the fat ratios. The ketogenic to a certain extent is a form of fasting. True fasting especially dry fasting is like being on a keto diet on steroids. The health benifits are crazy, but its fricking hard. When combined with the keto diet for breaking the fast the health benifits and especially fat loss benifits are crazy, but like i said its also crazy hard especially in south louisianas rich food culture.

thats why i don't recommend it to people for weight loss and honestly usually for health. The best diet for health is one you will stick to get the excess body fat off. this is almost always going to have the biggest effect on health markers.

now in the case of this thread, he asked advice for a very specific health concern. thats different.

First thing to understand is that ingested cholesterol has close to zero bearing on measured blood cholesterol.

Second thing to understand is that cholesterol probably isn't very important to keep track of in the first place.

Third thing to understand is that high cholesterol correlates POSITIVELY with all-cause mortality.

Fourth thing to understand is that you should stop doing what you've heard in the popular media all your life. The guy in this thread who immediately said "oatmeal and fruit" is perfectly representative. Bacon and eggs are VASTLY more healthy for you than oatmeal and fruit.

TL;DR I'm happy your Doc suggested diet as a solution instead of medicine...but still, no biggie, don't worry about it.

Yeah, I've read some of your other posts, and you and I are not going to agree, at all, on this aspect of it.
