They measured 140° on the blacktop of the bike course. One of the timing mechanisms melted. My wife made it to mile 90 before she had to give up.

Unreal conditions. It’s beautiful up here though. So not a totally wasted trip.

ETA: It will get up to 106° Tuesday and Wednesday

Anyone die? I can't imagine how many severe dehydrations there probably were.

Not that I’ve heard. The med tents were very busy.

Perhaps not by the people of TD, but the Idaho panhandle is a seriously underrated part of the country.

CSB, my BIL ran an Ironman today in Chicago. He’s a freak athlete.

Anyway, he’s never ran a triathlon before today and qualified for the Ironman World Championship.

People were coming up to him asking him who his coach was.

Didn’t realize it was that hot—that’s insane. Sam Long broke the bike course record by over 10 minutes. 4 hours 18 minutes for an average speed of 26 mph followed by a 2 hour 50 minute marathon (6:30/mi). Truly incredible

ETA: oh, and the bike course had 5,400 feet of elevation gain

Shiiiiiiiit. It was hot af at Ironman Texas a few years ago on the Hardy toll road but nothing like that. And almost no elevation compared to that. Idk how anyone finished in those conditions.

I would be so pissed if I scheduled a race thinking I was going to avoid high temps, and then come race day be hit with triple digits

but its also hard to be pissed while in Couer d'Alene

beautiful place

Idk, if I spent the amount of time/energy training and then had to bail because the conditions were that extreme, I could probably still find a way to be pissed in a beautiful place like that haha

She was originally scheduled to race Santa Rosa last year but it was canceled and this is what her group deferred to. She’s pretty upset because she trained for two years for this. It’s going to be 110° tomorrow now which is going to break a record. They almost had to shed weight (passengers) on our flight today because there’s a weight limit at a certain temperature. I had never heard of that before.

Sam is a beast. The run took out a few of the pros. That’s when the temps really started spiking. The morning was still nice and cool. Started at 64°. But the sun comes up at 4:45 and by 9 or 10 it’s in the 80s. But by then Sam was nearly done with the bike (pros started at 5). Not to diminish what he did. Just adding context. And if anything that makes his run just as impressive since that was when we hit the mid 90s.

Just an update on the final numbers:

The race began with 2085 and ended with 1535, with a 26.4% DNF rate. The average DNF rate for a full Ironman is around 5% and Kona is only around 7%.

I had 2nd 100-miler planned for Saturday on the Colombia River Gorge in Washington. The temp was 106 that day. I got credit for my airfare in the future and enjoyed my Saturday.

We had people cancel their reservations at our condo 30miles from CDA, due to the heat.

I'm thankful we're starting our annual summer trek out there late this year. We are traveling in a Subaru (no lesbian) and small camper w two 75lb dogs and a 1yo and 2yo. It's the Ironman of fatherhood. It has been super nice in SC/GA this spring/summer. Atlanta high today: 86. Missoula: 103.

My sister and her friends were there. My sister finished, but I think out if their group of 10 or so only 3 finished. I've been telling her to find a new hobby for years...
