Help settle a debate: What burns more calories?

This guy I work with says doing 400 situps burns more calories than running 3 miles.
I don't necessarily agree or disagree with him, but it got me curious.
What say you?

Sit-ups are anaerobic. You’re not going to burn many calories. A 5k is about 200 calories.

3 miles no question.
Think about it, your legs need to push your bodyweight along a path for 3 miles while your other muscles provide stability.
Situps only require your abs to lift a fraction of your bodyweight.

The fitness app I use usually says I burn around 400 calories when I do a 5k. Usually around 27-28 minutes.

Elevated HR burns calories but 3 miles for a decent runner would only take 24 minutes or less.
400 sit-ups would take a while, and if you’re going at a decent pace, it would definitely increase your HR and take at least 30-40 minutes.

Roughly you burn 100 calories per mile.
And roughly burn the same running it or walking it.

Walking is good. Just underrated since people think running burns so many more calories, but in reality it doesn’t.

Why don’t you just do it and report back with the results?

Aetobic exercise birns more calories than anaerobic. Both are areobic. It is a wash.

Cal/distance may be the same. But cal/time is not.
I'd rather burn 300 calories in 25 minutes than in 45 minutes.

Sure you may burn the same per distance, but EPOC usually dictates that running will burn more than walking a similar distance.

400 GHD sit-ups. You’d prob get rhabdo doing them as well.

Breaking down the ab muscles will require calories over the next few days to build the muscle back up. I would have to go with the ab exercise.

According to the Livestrong website, you can use the following numbers as a base for calories burned for each exercise by a man weighing 185 lbs:
400 sit ups = 160 calories (max)
3 miles @ 5 mph pace = 425 calories
Sit ups
Running 3 miles

400 sit-ups would take like 25 minutes tops I would think
1 second per, do a set in a minute then take 2 minutes rest. 8 sets of that is 400

Make it 400 GHD sit-ups and now you’re talking.
