They are going to make vertical cut across my breast plate to remove a stomach tumor. Other than walking a few miles a day what else should I do? Bench press, crunches etc

I feel like this is something you should consult your doctors with.

You’d be surprised how weak you can get in the hospital, particularly if you’re there for a while. I would be doing things for strength, particularly leg strength. I don’t know your fitness level but things like deep squats and squat variations like lunges, split squats. Maybe even just working
up from the floor without your hands. Rows/pulldowns and bench press/push-ups too. Make sure you are eating plenty of protein as your body will need it to heal

right now? i would start basic barbell work linear progression with a program like stronglifts or similar
after the surgery....you need to take to your doctor
and when i say right now im assuming you are cleared to lift. he is gonna give you the exercises you can and cant do.

If you're talking about after then walking. Maybe not a few miles but a few feet at first.

I’m just curious, what were you symptoms that led to the tumor being discovered?

Easily Bench press and dips. You want to go in the surgery where everyone is awestruck by your chest.

You are going to have sternal precautions, so can’t use arms to push up out of a chair when going to stand up. So I would do higher rep body weight squats. Put a five gallon bucket under your arse to make sure you hit the right depth.

TutHillTiger : sorry to hear this. Lots of factors that go into your exercise plan and it’s too much to try and discuss here. As a PT, I’d be happy to help if you’d like. Respond with your email if so, and I’ll reach out to do the best I can to get you on the right track as the surgery approaches

I just had open heart surgery 7 weeks ago and the biggest problem after was breathing. The pain wasn’t bad, off pain medicine after a week. When they let you walk do as much as you can. The breathing exercises are really important to expand your chest.

if they have to cut through the fascia, you’re going to have some lengthy post-surgery limitations on how much weight you can pick up.
take it easy, rest, let the body heal.
