Gym and personal trainer advice

Hey fellas, I'm new to the Fitness Board. I want to get into lifting weights and adding muscle mass. I was always a runner and played soccer growing up so I never lifted weights or had the interest. I am looking for a gym in the Birmingham metro south. I do not know the first thing about a weight lifting regimen or the proper form.
Besides finding a gym, I want to know if it would behoove of me to get a personal trainer for a month or find a gym like Golds Gym that has personal trainers on staff?

27 yo
I am open to any and all advice for a beginner.

Give CrossFit a try. Aren’t you military? They’ll even give you a discount. The personal training is built into the programming

CrossFit would be a good deal of you find the right box, or a powerlifting gym would be good.
Another thing you could do is look up starting strength certified coaches in your area and go that route for learning form.

I did CrossFit six or seven years ago. I was definitely in the greatest shape of my life, but I didn't gain the muscle mass that I want now.
There is an Iron Tribe right down the hill from my work. Is that a similar option to CrossFit?

Yea iron tribe is the same.

join crossfit to learn proper form. We can give you a program to follow.
or there is a gym called chaulk you could join a few months to learn form. also icon performance.
once you learn the lifts we can help from there. or you could teach yourself the lifts. in that case, starting strength and the greyskull lp walk you through how to do the lifts and you can use youtube.

I reckon I spend too much time on the OT because I thought it was still cool to trash CrossFit.
I never got the personal attention at the box I frequented. Guess I should ask the folks I know around here their opinion of the boxes here in town.

You were in the military and never touched a weight?
What branch was this?
Don’t hire a trainer. Do some research online and put your own regiment together. This is coming from a guy who trained people at globogyms and was a CrossFit coach for a couple years.

I think I have a clue.
Back on topic, in the post Al Gore internet era we live in, it is a complete waste of time to hire a trainer unless you just need someone to count reps and tell you stories between sets. You can get everything you need on You Tube.

The fitness board on TD is good if you want some advice from a few solid posters. If you're really looking for a lot of different programs to look in to I would check out r/Fitness on Reddit. They have a lot of great programs set up there that you can research. As far as getting a trainer, I wouldn't waste your money. He's not really gonna push anymore than you're willing to push yourself.

I'm going to try a 5x3 program in a 24/7 type gym and away from metcon.

I agree use Youtube, TD Fitness and rest of Internet for help/advice and save money not getting trainer.
Better experts than I here, but I would ramp up with Starting Strength or Stronglifts 5x5 to build strength and learn big major lifts.
You are going to start out light (empty bar even) and progress linear from there. Starting Strength has a great book to read if you want and SL 5x5 is just a rip-off from that mostly. There are a crap ton of Mark Rippetoe videos on the web to show you proper form.
This is assuming you are not going to go a CrossFit route and just want to hit a gym.
