Make sure you wear your tight riding panties and bright flashing lights so that everyone knows your a serious bike ridier and not some douchy dork on an e bike that tries to get flatened everywhere

It’s a legit problem. My bike I got last year cost more than my first or second cars.

Tell that to the family of the 77 year old LSU professor killed on his bike at the LSU lakes last year. I'm sure they'd appreciate your such spot on wicked sense of humor.

Direct to consumer brands serve a purpose if you're willing to turn a wrench on it from time to time.

Certainly a sad situation but that happened 5 years ago, not last year. The driver of the vehicle that hit the professor was not arrested.

Shits rough lol. If you are willing to do some research Chinese manufacturers have come a long way in the last 10 years if you want to save some money. Tavelo, Winspace, quickpro, are some legit brands making good product for a very competitive price

The X-lab bikes are pretty nice, and its XDS that has been making all the big name bikes for decades. Can get a carbon frame with 105 component for 2100.

This is the golden age for bikers, at least for mountain bikers.
Derailleurs just work, no more fiddling around with tension screws or even hangers now.
Brakes are more powerful than ever and easy to bleed.
Carbon everything! Carbon wheels dont break all the time now, dont feel like riding rocks and actually stay true for a long time. Carbon cranks and bars are hard to break now also.
Everyone makes a good bike now. I can't tell you the last time I rode a bike that felt off.
Suspension doesnt wallow around on you.

Agreed, there aren't "bad" bikes anymore just bad fit mostly related to geometry preferences; build specs in terms of drivetrain, brakes, suspension, wheelset, etc can be upgraded once a rider knows more about what they want.
I've been riding 40+ years started off a pure road rider and raced competitively, then got a MTB ~30 yrs ago, and finally dropped the road bike ~20 yrs ago when I got tired of soccer moms on their phones trying to kill me. 100% MTB ever since.
The used market is very good now - in part because ebikes are the fastest growing segment of the bike market - but you also have to know what you want and the only way to learn that is to ride lots first and then try as many different bikes at demo events and rental fleets.
CL and faceborg market can be decent sources depending on location but also look at
Pinkbike buy/sell
and Bicycle Blue Book is a decent resource for pricing similar to Kelly Blue Book for cars

I'm also back on the bike after a long layoff.
I follow taffic rules, wear a helmet and visible clothing, light my bike at night, have reflective tires, and don't wear earbuds.
I also assume that 90 percent of drives cannot see me, and the other 10% are trying to kill me.
I'm a lot older now, and I really don't want to end up dead or in the ER, but biking is the only excercise I enjoy.

I would love to get into MBT. But it’s so expensive even for a mid grade bike.
