Recently got rid of my Apple Watch as I never really liked the shape of it/plus having to charge it everyday

I've been looking at the Garmin Instinct. There doesn't seem to be too much of a difference in the original Instinct and Instinct 2, and the original Instinct is ~$150 cheaper on Amazon

I'm not a huge outdoorsman and will use it for pretty standard cardio/strength training workouts. The only real smartwatch feature I care about is knowing when I have a text if I have my phone in my pocket

I have a couple group text threads with friends that I have notifications silenced for on my phone. Will the Instinct still show I have a message without the haptic notification. (if I look down at my wrist periodically will it show a msg from a silenced group thread, or will it not silence the notification at all)

The apple watch did this but I assume iOS is much more seamless with iPhone to apple watch

You will only get a notification if your phone would have had a notification. So no you will not get a notification for a silenced group text thread.

I have had a garmin forerunner 245 for a couple years now and it has been a great watch.

I recently busted my apple watch on a kettlebell so I'm in the market for a sports watch as well. I am comparing the Garmin Vivoactive 4 ($250), the Garmin Venu 2 ($350), and the Polar Ignite 2 ($230). I am wanting to get away from Apple watch because of battery life, and more limited fitness features. Currently leaning toward the Polar Ignite 2 for features and price.

I’ve had a vivoactive 3 and the original Venu. I’d go Vivoactive 4 over Venu 2 probably. The screen is nice but I like the week long battery life and the watch faces aren’t that amazing that I use the oled much

Garmin 245 here, no complaints. Though when/if it ever dies I’ll be looking into getting a Coros.

Well, I re-read your post and it may not be what you’re looking for. Coros is geared toward running, though I think they just released a trail/hiking watch.

I recently purchased a Garmin VivoMove Sport to provide me the same info you are seeking. I’ve only had it a couple weeks but so far I’m liking it and the info it provides. Does a good job of notifying you as texts come through, and though I do have an iPhone I don’t know if silences a group text without haptic notification if you have notifications silenced on your iPhone - that info is not provided in the owners manual. Comes in at about a $170 price point.

Nice thanks for the rec. Now I seem to be between a Garmin 245 and the Vivoactive 4S. The vivoactive 4 being 45mm is probably too big. I could wear the 245 at 42mm. I did a side by side comparison and am leaning toward vivoactive. I am more of a fitness/gym person that does a little running which seems to be what Vivoactive gears to.

I'm also considering Garmin watches. It's frustrating that features that should be available are not across the line. For example, I like a lot about the Venu 2 Plus but when following a plan and, say, told to increase intensity there are only beep notifications and not voice instructions. I could use my phone but don't want to take it around everywhere exercising.

I have looked at a few myself because I have a Garmin 225 and don't run like I used to. I opted to not buy anything else because when I'm weight training, I take my watch off. I like to wear wrist wraps due to having surgery on both wrist.

Bought a Garmin Vivoactive 4 a week or so ago. Seems like a good one for the price point. $185 refurb but new is like $250ish. It is my first smart watch. Well second since I did the Pebble Kickstarter deal.

Over the past five years, I have had an Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, and now the Garmin Epix 2.

The Epix 2 is by far my favorite watch to date. I thought I wanted all the bells and whistles of a smart watch, but found myself constantly getting aggravated at unnecessary notifications and distractions, constant charging (every day), and inconsistent cellular switching that drained the battery (had cellular models of each). I finally realized that I really use my watch for quick glance message notifications, health data, and exercising.

Those three things are done really well on the latest versions of Garmin watches. While I cannot voice to text on my Epix 2 (maybe a deal-breaker for some), I have come to not give a shite about quickly responding back to people. The Epix 2 is very expensive but I run, cycle, hike, and exercise very regularly and the data and battery it provided is perfect.

To the notification question, the Garmin watches will mirror your phone's notifications; if you do not get a notification on your phone for a silenced group chat, you will not on your watch. Furthermore, you can customize what notifications hit the watch as well.

Look into the various faces offered through Garmin. You might find one that permanently shows notifications.

I have a Fenix 6 and have it set up so I receive those notifications but they don't stay permanently on my screen. I can check notifications by scrolling to the Notifications widget.
