I did 1.5 miles with 10-pound dumbbells last week. It was rather easy.

This morning I did the same thing but threw in about 100 lunges. Still kinda easy but I sweat like crazy.

Love farmer carries. I have a trap bar at home and use that on my inclined driveway

1.5 miles / 15-pound dumbbells

This was way more difficult than 10 pounds. My forearms fatigued quickly and I really felt a burn in my shoulders, but I managed to finish without stopping. I broke a hefty sweat, but wasn't totally drenched like yesterday.

I read your user name twice to make sure it wasn’t mine.

I’ve been doing the exact same thing with the exact same mileage. I do the double 10 lb carry for 1.5 miles. I alternate the carry position on this between the traditional suitcase, then a single arm waiter carry, and then a double arm waiter carry. After that, I do a single arm carry with the 15 lb dumbbell for 1.5 miles. Half way through, I’ll change it to the other hand alternating between a suitcase carry and waiter carry. Do this on my off days from running Mon/Weds/Fri.

Really works my shoulders and forearms. I expect to look like Popeye the Sailor in the next month or so......

It's amazing how much harder 15 lbs was versus 10. Maybe I should have warmed up at least a little beforehand.

Yes. I do the 10 lb carry first, then do the 15 lb carry later in the day. My plan is to do this until Dec, then go up in weight to double 15 and single 20.

I pass this older guy every Tuesday on my morning run. I figure he goes about 3-4 miles, maybe more.

Stopped and talked to this guy today. He’s 64. He walks 3-5 miles 4 or more times a week carrying a set of 12 lb weights. He said he tried 15 lb, but that hurt his hands. He rotates sets of hammer curls and a variety or overhead curls in sets of 20.

Dude looks like one of those Ironman triathlon people.

I love farmer's walks, but I pass this older lady 5x a week. She is carrying two 8# dumbells, so not much less than him. She looks like a much fatter Paula Dean. So it may not be all he's doing

Reviving this thread - I've been sporadically doing Farmer's Walks, but I've been leaning towards incorporating longer, steady walks. I normally do like 6 sets with 35lbs in each hand for maybe 150-200 yards.

I go on a lot of early morning 3-4 mile walks. I think I want to start carrying some weight on these walks. I have some lighter weight dumbbells and my kettlebells start at 15lbs. Doubt I could do 3 miles out the gate with the 15's, but maybe I'll go as far as I can with the 15's then finish out the rest of the walk unloaded. Build up from there. Progress with increasing distance and/or weight.

I've also done some carry's with a weight vest, but I'm not trying to do miles just yet with carry's AND the vest. Has anyone really fallen in love with Farmer's walks and do you think they made you more yoked?

Old time bodybuilder Steve Reeves was a big proponent. He called it power walking. I've been doing farmer's walks for a while, usually at the end of my workouts, but by that point I'm usually running short on time and/or energy. I probably should make them a separate workout.

Dan John preaches the benefits of farmers carries all the time but I've also heard him mention the benefits of walking with something like the old heavy hands. I'm pretty sure he mentioned Steve Reeves when I've heard him talk about this.

I have never even heard of the farmer’s walk.
It's kinda the civilian version of the ruck march, which has existed for a little bit. And you can carry way more than 40lbs. GoRuck has different exercises you can do with the rucksack, too.

Carry dumb bells if you want to,

High school baseball coach made all the players that were failing a class carry a 45 pound plate above their head and walk around the circumference of the baseball field the whole practice

No chance most high school baseball players could do this without multiple breaks unless your practices were like 20 minutes.

I think you can make the argument for the farmers walk being the single best overall movement for a wide variety of goals.

I do them religiously twice a week.

I have a couple packs and use them from time to time. But I have a plate carrier vest, its a different feeling when the weight is proportional front and back vs pulling only on the back.

Still doesn't replace carries where your grip, arms, shoulders come into play.

I'll ruck a few times a week with a weight vest while walking the dog, past couple weeks seen a dude walking around with steel clubs, he seems to be doing a lot of different mobility things with them and not just a straight farmers carry for distance

never really considered doing a long walk with dumbbells as usually the farmers carries I do is to end of drive way and back with heavier weights but might give this a try.

I guess I’m not reading something right on the website, because I can’t figure out if any plates come with the rucksacks.

I've been doing a variant of this with a kettlebell extended overhead and I like it even better for my core

Try KB carries held in the goblet position. Really work on bracing your core during the carry. They will get after your core.

Go ruck is going to upsell the plates but believe you can find/have cheaper options out there, amazon etc.

Is it better to do them one arm at a time? It seems like having equal weight in each hand would take the stability component out of them.

I’ve done these to cap off leg day and it’s amazing how quickly these will gas you.
