I won’t do the whole year dry, but I plan to drink much less frequently. I haven’t had a drink in almost a month. I feel great. I didn’t and don’t have a drinking problem, but it’s so customary to drink that I never went for than 5 or 6 days without a drink. I’m waiting until after my next strongman competition in the middle of March to have a night I can celebrate and have some drinks at an after party.

I likely won’t make the whole year either but I’ll probably have less than a dozen drinks by 2024. This time last year I was coming off of a diet where I lost about 40 lbs. I was still having the occasional drink or two, but hadn’t had a beer since October of 2021. After my birthday last spring I cut even further back. I think I went all of May and June without anything and if it wasn’t a Fourth of July cookout I wouldn’t have had any beer. Had my first in 9 months then. Not another since. Went from the 4th to middle of October without a drop. Had some on vacation and not again until NYE watching ballgames with my dad. If I can do it anyone can. Covid had me overweight and drinking almost everyday. The fact I can tell you exactly how many I’ve had since last May is amazing to me. I’d go through a couple of fifths of bourbon a month. The one I had last May is still sitting in the cabinet collecting dust.

Here's some added motivation.

New study published in Nature showing even small amounts of alcohol consumption cause brain damage.

Gotta lose weight for several health issues and I just cant exercise and eat right when Im hungover. I'm not drinking again until I get to a weight range im comfortable with and am able to get back into decent shape. Could be all of 2023, could be longer.

Fitting username.

First strong crave to drink today came after an interview. It went very well, and I think I'm getting the job, but I won't know for 3 days. I want to just crawl into my bed, knock back some makers/WR/OF and let my mind go far away until the call comes in.

I won't cave, but it sure does seem nice.

I’ve got a final interview over dinner tonight. I feel strangely nervous about having to explain that I’m extending dry January into the year without them thinking I’m an alcoholic or weirdo. It’s interesting how drinking in certain professions is seen as necessary.

Im sure it’s 100% in my head.

1. I think it's all in your head.
2. You shouldn't feel the need to explain yourself at all for not drinking.
3. Would you really want to work at a company that would hold not drinking against you anyway?

I wouldn’t. I’m just in medical sales and most work functions, team building meetings, etc, revolve around cocktail hours and things like that.

Had a great interview and she and I drank soda water with lime all night. It was wonderful and I did explain my drinking (or lack thereof) to her, but only because she asked what I did to stay in shape.

How is saying that you’re in this dry january cult better than them assuming you’re an alcoholic?

Yeah, a bunch of people finding support to stop an activity that is, objectively, a net negative to your health is cultish.

You've clearly taken the bait of making a positive thing into something to be clowned because bars are losing a little bit (not actually much at all) of money.

Don’t feed the troll.

Noticeable changes in how my skin looks. Probably helps that I bought one of those huge water jugs and am trying to drink 100 ounces of water each day.

Some of our friends came over last weekend and they all drank 1-2 bottles of wine/champagne each. I didn’t miss it in the least. By the end of the night they were slightly obnoxious and I was cringing thinking I have been like that around my kids. They told me about their next day hangovers…I was up at 7 am on a five mile walk before church and felt great.

I find that I’m missing it so much less than I thought.

It’s crazy how my mind plays tricks. Thinking how can I enjoy an evening without it to 30 days later not even thinking about it, then back to drinking every day.

Is it really possible that at 40, 2 beers will give me a hangover? It’s mostly felt in the mornings upon waking, even the second day feel hungover for an hour. I think it’s all related to sleep. I get 7hrs, but probably need 9 when drinking.

Mind over matter. Our minds are far more powerful than most people give credit for.

I did some reading that suggested the reason you don’t feel rested after 8-9 hours of sleep post drinking is because you experience less REM sleep cycles as compared to when you don’t drink.

I'd say yes.

Maybe I was a bit young, or maybe I'm hyper aware of how I feel, but I started to feel shitty drinking around 27/28. More than 3 drinks and I could feel it the next. day. I'm 30 now, and if I have one drink I'm okay, but definitely a little thrown off kilter. Not a hangover, but something is different.

I think I might actually be done for good.

Quit 14 years ago. Never missed it except after skiing.

In business situations, I think most people are relieved when I order a San Peligrino. People never ask why I don’t drink. They enjoy the night being sober and remembering our conversation.

I love to drink. Two weak drinks and a glass of red wine every day. I’d like to try cutting back or none for Lent but know total abstinence won’t work. Any suggestions on a routine that will allow for some detox but not be total abstinence? And something to fill the two hours every night like a drink would soda and isn’t too caloric?

I just know they are going to discover that alcohol is good for you. After I quit.

Does quitting beer count and switching to very small quantities of bourbon count?

Sunday was week 5 without a single beer.
