some say carbs are good, some say bad. how do i know what to believe?

Well it is not great for health, in general it is processed but it isn't going to kill you to have a couple slices a week so long as it fits your macros.

It depends on how it fits ypur overall diet plan.
Beyond that, it's not super healthy, but there are way worse options.

What do morbidly obese people shove into their mouth? I would personally do the opposite.

To be fair, anything. They love eating way too much steak or bacon wrapped pork tenderloin as much as bon bons a lot of the time.

I prefer to use wraps, rice or vegetables for any of my carbs
My wife loves bread but she German so that’s expected
Trying to work bread into a diet can be difficult with how loaded with carbs each slice is

Ever been to Europe? They eat bread like it’s going out of style and I went weeks without seeing morbidly obese people when I lived there.

Yes and I lived there for five years
They are much more active than Americans
They tend to walk everywhere and not drive, so they are just burning it all off being on the move. There are better sources for carbs
It’s why people in American cities tend to be in better shape than those who don’t live in and around the city
Often times once I parked my car Friday after work I didn’t drive until Monday morning.

My understanding is bread used to be more nutritious when it was made the old way, I guess that was with live cultures or what have you. Supposedly sourdough bread is the only type that they were not able to make the new, convenient (albeit nutrient lacking) way. I read this many years ago. Maybe it is still this way, or maybe it is a good place to start looking for better bread.

Nature's Own Life series of breads are game changers for macro/calorie counters.

But this board is generally pretty active, so bread should be fine, right?

its all about calories in / calories out. carbs are carbs. granted complex ones will keep you fuller for longer periods of time. people that break down all types of food types make life way too complicated.
get your TDEE and workout some. eat less than you burn and you will lose weight and probably be healthy.

I see it as wasted calories. Not terrible but something to mostly avoid.

I agree with this if you must eat bread. Get the seedy kinda (bc seeds are good for you) and get the thin sliced stuff. You’re looking at like 60 calories/slice for a lot of nutrition from seeds and minimal wheat flour.
