Was it full reps? As in, touched his chest with the bar and didn’t bounce it off of his chest? If so, he’s on some good shite.

I’m not gonna lie - at 23 I was a monster on bench press

I learned two things from that time in my life:

1. Your shoulders and arms will hate you years later
2. It’s kinda pointless

I was benching over twice my body weight

And now - I hate to even bench over 150. Not much practical value in it

Harvill set world records in the bench press in the following age groups: 14 and under, 15 and under and 16 years old.

The 14-U record was set March 1, 2007, when Harvill benched 405 pounds — then he did 33 reps at 225 pounds two minutes later. His 15-U record was 505 pounds

I just think if a 14 year old could do 33 reps then an 18 year old probably could get up to 40

Under the right circumstances

Did you help him create an account on TigerDroppings?

Sounds like he belongs on the OT

Take that energy and time used to get to benching 400 pounds and use that in squatting

One is way more practical than the other

No one said its impossible stupid, but youre talking about a world record holder. 99% of gyms in this country don't have a single dude that can do 225 40 times.

Why I said someone who is focused on bench and has the right body type would be possible.

The NFL combine is not a good comparison because the athletes arent training for the bench press and their body types arent necessarily great for bench press.

Is doing 40 reps at 225 lbs for a 18 year old normal. Saw a kid at gym doing it yesterday. He asked me to spot him.

Um. No. That’s not normal. And I don’t believe you. That’s NFL strength levels. Most NFL players don’t even come close. Either he was doing half reps or your’re being dishonest.

ETA: Now that I think about it, if he was a power lifter, it’s possible. Tey train strictly for raw strength. But it’s not normal for an 18 year old to do that.

I think this is true.

After super bowl each year I always focus on reppin 225 to compare to the combine results for bench and I've been consistently hitting 35+. I can't believe that these huge college DT's and OL are only doing something similar when I am almost twice their age. Plus most are juiced.

It seems like they aren't focused or it doesn't matter. They can rep 35 and run a 4.9 with a 40" vertical. I can't run or jump only bench, but I am like a machine on 225 after only three months of intense focus.

I can't believe someone jacked to the moon who can run a 4.3 like Laron Landry couldn't knock out 40 reps.

I think that OP 18yr old could do it but he must be jacked and weigh in at 245 and look like an NFL linebacker or DE.

The real joke is the DBs and WRs who only get 4 reps. How does a college player who's been playing and lifting for years only hit 4.

I feel the same way when you see their wonderlic scores after attending 4 years of college. or the cats like Manley who couldn't even read after college.

Football players don’t strictly train for strength. There are tons of guys who thought they could make it in the league by being the strongest. They failed. WRs and DBs don’t need a strong bench. The position doesn’t call for it. Sure, you can do more reps on bench than NFL guys, but what about power cleans? Deadlifts? They train to use their body as a whole and be explosive and be athletic and be fast and go for 4 quarters of a collision sport. Having a high bench is good for PR, but that’s pretty much it. I’m not knocking you personally, just giving you a response.

ETA: LaRon Landry was one of the hardest hitting safeties ever. Good luck squaring up with that.

It makes sense that this thread looks like it got moved over from the OT because there are some incredibly misguided takes in here.

Most I've done is 27-30 and I got 435 around that time. So yeah, you miscounted or he half repping and bouncing.
