Thinking about getting a Tonal. Have few friends who use them and love it. It’s just too hard to get out of the house to work out with young kids and free weights aren’t an option.

I’ve seen some people complain online that the max weight is heavy enough but if I somehow got to that point, the Tonal would have done it’s job lol

Why?

At nearly 5 G’s, you can get a nice home gym setup that isn’t a total waste of money

It’s cool and definitely heavy enough to get a good workout.

But, like anything else. You have to consistently use it to get results and be worth the money.

I would get a pull-up bar and a heavy kettlebell. That would take up very little space. Be much cheaper and be just as effective if you follow a consistent program.

If he’s against or can’t use free weights, what’s he going to do with a pull up bar and a “heavy” kettlebell?

Jeff Landry passed constitutional carry so you don’t have to work out anymore

Don’t have the space for free weights and planning to possibly put the tonal in our bedroom

How far is it from your house to the gym?

Tonal is 4300 for their latest model and 60 a month for the membership to get the most out of the equipment

A planet fitness black card membership with taxes is 25 a month

You could pay for 14 years of a gym membership with just the up front costs and then the subscription costs incrementally more than a gym membership

Why can't you go to the gym before everyone wakes up?

We got one the last time they went on sale, they constantly have deals on them.

My wife loves it, she uses several of the different programs and can follow along without having to think of what to do.

I have a power rack and db kbs rower and rogue bike and wanted a cable tower for accessory work so this was the perfect fit for us without taking up a huge amount of room.

I was really into it bc it was different the first 4-6 weeks we had it but after the newness wore off I don’t do any of the program stuff anymore.

Use them? You still have to exert force with the tonal.

He didn’t say he was injured.

I assumed it was a space issue for a typical barbell, weights and a rack.

So with a pull up bar he can do pull ups, bar hangs and some ab exercises. With a heavy, let’s say 50lbs+, kettlebell he has some options but not a ton.

It’s just not a good suggestion when he’s obviously looking for more of a full body, cable type machine option.

It’s kind of like saying just go for a run and do push ups and sit ups…which are actually probably better options than you gave.

Very few people can do pull ups and very few have any idea of what to do with a heavy kettlebell.

I have one, it's the only reason I workout. I like the programs, I like it showing my status, increase in strength, etc.

Bent over rows
Swings
Shoulder press
Stiff leg deadlifts
Goblet Squats
Single leg split squat
Cleans
Farmers

So yes, all that plus pull-ups is full body.

He can still do those things. So my suggestion actually gave him more options.

Again, why are we assuming this about OP? We don't know anything about him. I was just giving him a compact and relatively cheap option.

shite, he could get two moderate weight kettlebells, or dumbbells, and just to dumbbell thrusters and he'd get a good workout out of it. Add in a pullup bar, and he could do an old school Crossfit Fran WOD.

There are hundreds of youtube videos that go over just single kettlebell workouts.

But if young children are the issue, just get up early and head to the local Anytime Fitness. That's what I did when my kid was young. 5am workouts are a bitch, but its better than doing nothing.

I agree. It's way more cost effective to use bodyweight and a couple of weights. You can get in amazing shape and it doesn't take hardly any space.

But, if the question is "are Tonals nice?"

Then, yes it is very nice quality and gives plenty of resistance. You control resistance on both the eccentric and the concentric portions of a movement. Tons of exercise options. But, they are expensive and require a subscription if you want the full package. If cost is no object and you like the idea of one then go for it!

Like anything they are not magic. You have to consistently follow a program to get the results. I sit indoors in front of a screen all day. So, personally, I like going outside to the garage, lifting weights and doing sprints in the road.

OP.....Mingo is right

but if you dont have room for a gym, lets do this instead before you go spend 5k on a tonal

1) buy a above the door way pullup bar from rogue. the jammer model LINK

2) buy a set of wooden gymnastics rings LINK

this is going to put you out less than $200. you can email me at

lsu777td

gmail

and I will send you over body by rings. you can adjust the rings to what every difficulty you can handle at the moment to complete the program. Add in bodyweight leg exercises using leverage or single leg version to increase difficulty.

do this for 12 weeks and see where you are before you go drop 5k on a tonal

if you can do 12 weeks on this, then spend 1200 on a nice set of adjustable DBs and an adjustable bench that you can stand in the corner before spending money on a tonal.

i love electronic resistance like the voltra 1 and others but not tonal and certainly not someone starting out working out at home as it will end up being a huge waste of money more than likely.
