Nice explanation. What about hepatic fructose (as opposed to glucose) metabolism and ethanol (often called the metabolic cousin of fructose). Seems an everclear and OJ is a giant nuclear bomb to the liver

I think there is evidence to suggest that.

LINK

In addition, I think the sugars in OJ are about 1/3 sucrose, 1/3 fructose, 1/3 glucose. Sucrose very quickly breaks down into glucose and fructose so it's really about 50/50.

The fructose + alcohol both stress the liver, and the glucose stresses the pancreas, and the resulting insulin elevation can further stress the liver!

Here’s a good video on the science of alcohol and what to do if you’re training. It’s a YouTube link.

And I guess a high-fructose corn syrup Coke w 151 rum would rank high on the liver hit list too. I believe the most commonly used hfcs varieties are between 45-55% fructose.

I'm just thinking of all the ways I tried to kill myself in college.

If I drank a lot I ate a loaf of sandwiches. If I smoked weed I ate a bucket of chicken.

I gave them both up.

Eh, I guess it's a good thing the liver is pretty good about fixing itself!

It's kind of a shame that a lot of the experiments we would need to fully quantify the impact of alcohol on the human body are actually unethical to perform. You can't quite have doctors/researches telling people "Here, consume this 12 pack of Busch Light every day for a week and then try to run a 5k ... let me know what happens"

Yep. That's why we end up w a bunch of crazy n=1ers self-experimenting, and nutrition will never be an exact science.

I only drink on Saturdays. It’s my cheat meal day so I will have a beer or two with my meals. Now that’s football season, I drink a little more on Saturday, but my tolerance is so shite right now I can really only drink one or two more than normal. And on Sunday, I really don’t eat a lot, so I’m not overly worried about it. I just make sure I don’t get carried away.

I drink during LSU/Saints games or if I’m lighting the BBQ put. I’ve cut down the amount a lot. And I stopped stocking my fridge with IPAs and DIPAs that are 250-300 cals a piece.

It's obvious you aren't serious about peak performance so don't even worry about it.

Sorry for sounding brash but once you know the truth, a lot of things come in to perspective.

ive toned my consumption down to a pour or two of scotch over ice w/ splash of water a few nights a week . 80-100 calories per 1.5 oz.

at 165 lbs all I really need is 1-2 drinks max to feel a buzz. compared to 4 craft beers per drinking session, the calorie difference over a week is substantial.

obviously you would have to like scotch to even consider this, but I feel this is an effective way ,for me, to get a buzz at night without over indulging in carbs and calories.

Gin is another relatively low calorie drink , but I cant drink gin over ice

Same here. Cut it out this year and lost a bunch of weight. I sleep better, feel 10 years younger, and can run like I did in my mid 30's.
