I quit. Started smoking at 13 and quit at 30. You can do it. I used everything to help: nicotine gum, the patch, and Welbutrin/Chantix or whatever it is now.

The keys for me: avoid your associative cigarette habits. I always smoked when driving, drinking coffee, drinking Coke, or beer. So, for 6 months, I avoided all those things. I didn’t start drinking beer or coffee again until I felt comfortable. I never drove without a stick out chewing gum.

It’s important to remember why you are quitting. I never went anywhere without a picture of my kids. Every time I felt an urge, I’d dig that picture out to remind myself.

You have no idea how bad you’ve been feeling while smoking. I can’t describe to you how much better you’ll feel in a week. Even better in a month. You like food? You have no idea how bad your taste buds are right now. Everything will taste better in a week. In a month, you’ll be amazed at what you’ve been missing.

Good luck brother. I’ll be praying for you. You can do this.

I have 2 boys. They are the reason I'm quitting, without a doubt.

I chewed gum on the 50 min commute to work this morning and at work. Also, sunflower seeds seems to help. I have a desk job, so I take a couple 15 minute "brisk walk" breaks. Awesome how much more ground I cover and how much faster I walk without smoking a cigarette during my walk.

When you want to smoke, just light it up and stick it in your cheek.

Good for you

Friday will be 2 months for me

I took Chantix for about a month before I quit, I got a bad sinus infection & felt crappy enough to not take any of my meds so I quit Chantix & smoking at the same time

I have found the following helpful:
Roll down windows in the car like you would if you were smoking, something about the road noise was calming to me

Cinnamon Altoids, I keep a can in the car, after 3 my mouth burns & it makes the craving go away

Root beer barrels to suck on, I hate root beer but I like these while I work

I started walking in the afternoons, it helps to relieve stress & also, wears me out so it helps me sleep better (fall asleep faster, not laying there thinking about a smoke)

I have gained weight but tried to cut out eating crappy snacks, if I need to eat I grab an apple or some carrots

It’s hard being around smokers, I have avoided going to my parents as much as usual. If my mom lights up I move to the other side of the patio or go inside.

Orbit green gum is pretty good but I’ve found I prefer the Altoids

That’s all I can think of right now, just try different hard candies, suckers or snacks to see what you like the best
It’s not easy but you are doing yourself a huge favor & I believe it will be worth it

Good luck!

Don’t be afraid to use whatever helps. There are a ton of options, and most are free with Medicaid, insurance, or state programs. Chantix is the most effective, but you can also do combinations of patches, wellbutrin, gum, and lozenges, depending on your individual needs.

They will get you through it. Have little reminders of them around you: in the car, at work, on the phone. The recidivism rate for smoking is higher than that of heroine. Cigarettes are truly a beast to try and quit, but it can be done.

I bought tea tree oil toothpicks from a health food store. They seemed to help. The downside was that my tongue always felt raw from chewing on them.

There are app's the show you real time money savings. That helped me.

I read Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It basically says that the panic you feel when you need a cigarette at specific times is just manufactured. Non smokers don't have these issues.

When you are only a few days out, smoking / not smoking, and all the thoughts associated with smoking are in your head 24/7. It starts to feel like you will never think of anything other than smoking / not smoking. Just know that those thoughts get less and less and then they eventually stop all together.

Damn! This is where at I'm at right now and it's so true. Thank you so much for sharing it.

I feel great though, especially now that I feel that most if not all of the nicotine has left my body. Starting to cough up lung oysters, but I feel this nice steady clean energy.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Just start vaping (seriously). I'm sure you've heard the metric that's something like: if you've been smoking for 20 years, after 10 years of quitting, your lungs still look 90% as bad than if you had kept smoking. A lot of the damage is done. Just vape, get your nicotine and oral fix while avoiding piling tar on the damage you've already done and move on.

sunflower seeds

I smoked for over 10yrs and this is what got me through. I would either eat them individually or put several in my cheek shell & all like a chew, taste the salty goodness then spit them out.

2 weeks was where I felt like I was past the need for it. My gf at the time was a smoker so it may be quicker for you.

I’m also very thankfully able to smoke an occasional cigar without any thoughts of picking up a carton on the way home.

Good luck man, don’t give in.

Every single study I’ve ever seen says the opposite. Your lungs will heal itself, usually around 1-3 years for a 10-15 year smoker.

All of this. Main thing for me was to teach myself how to do things I enjoy without smoking. The second part was to get a hobby that smoking would prevent me from enjoying like running/exercise.

Congrats on making one of the most important decisions in ya life. I'm almost 8 years quit. Family took a river cruise in Europe and I decided to leave them at the airport...Cold Turkey. I had already broken a promise to my wife that I'd have it kicked prior to the wedding. So, I had to make it happen before the birth of my first child. A break from my daily routine (river cruise) was probably what got me through it, on top of really not wanting to carry the habit into fatherhood. You got this man.

This is true. You regain your initial lung capacity shortly after quitting.

I may need to take up smoking. Having food taste bad may be a God send for me

All joking aside, good advice.

What helped me after quitting for a couple days was walking by smokers and noticing how terrible they smelled. Once you quit for a week or so that sense comes back and you will not want to smell like that. That was all I really needed
