This is an old clip but made me laugh. John Daly thinks you should get fitted for grips

It’s somewhat of a joke on this board about suggesting you get fitted for everything even gloves and grips.

John Daly is drunk and not wearing shoes but thinks amateurs should get a grip fitting

Gotta love this guy

He is 10000% correct and the only thing funny is that you think that clip is funny

I’ve been around the game for nearly 70 years and I think that’s the easiest thing someone can do to improve their ball striking

He's not wrong. The grip is quite literally the only part of the club that the player touches.

To me, I think the fitting talk is all BS. I've never been fit and have figured out what I like in order to be repeatable. I've never been fit because everyone wants me to get fit on a mat, and that skews the numbers.

I'm not here to argue but if you've ever played a course with slick steep greens that sound like concrete when the ball hits and you want to stick the green with anything over a 9 iron you'd better hope your spin numbers are optimized.

However, if you're playing golf for the hang and getting outside every so often you're probably right it's way overblown.

I have a friend who could strike the ball but his irons would always pull left of target. One day he comes out with jumbo grips on his clubs and was firing away and hitting target.

I’ve been sold on the impact of grips since.

I got paired with an older couple in FL this Summer that swore the bigger grips made their irons more straight and consistent.

Bigger grips help with arthritis and calm the wrist.

I like a thicker grip. And I like the oversize grips for my putter. Takes a lot of wristplay play out.

This is true. Also if you usually push/fade/slice with a smaller grip, then go to a larger grip, it will likely be an adjustment and you will have to focus on turning the wrists over more. The larger grip, the "less closed" the hands will be naturally causing the wrists to be slightly more open leading to open face. I went through this myself when I first got mid-size grips on my irons a while back. It took just a 2-3 rounds to get it right, but even the very first round I felt I had more control of grip/club

The problem is most of the time when you get fitted it is with standard grips and if you plan on buying larger grips it is somewhat defeating the purpose of the fitting.

He tells us to get fitted for grips, then says the bigger the grips are, the better we'll play. Most people fit into a standard grip.

That drunk won a couple of majors after getting called last minute during a bender. I'd say he knows more about golf than most pros know.

IMO there are a lot of flaws with the "fitting" process most businesses offer. Realistically it should be a multiple day process with some observations made at the range on grass and a round of golf for it to be meaningful. And as you said, the fitting should be done with everything the way you plan on playing the club including the grip size.

They recommend standard for everything from a small glove size up to a M/L. That's a huge variation. I'm on the upper end of that and have recently found that +4 grips and some extra tape suit me very well, which makes sense since I was on the far end of the "standard" spectrum. Anyone above a medium glove should probably experiment with slightly larger grips imo. I started doing the air regripping so I can swamp them out and make changes easily. Game changer for me.

I use the Jumbo Max grips and absolutely love them. Especially on my driver.

It’s funny how often people want to try my clubs. Most say they would have to get used to it.
