We had one of those and the super always had the rule that cartpaths were the OB boundary with teeboxes 40 yds behind the actual tips and carnival holes. Was fun but a brutal day of golf.

I played in the Kidney Foundation event in early 2000 at Southern Trace with the winner going to the national event at Pebble Beach. Four-Person scramble with a combined handicap of at least 42 with only player lower than an eight handicap. Rules required that each player's tee-shots had to be used three times. I had played a few times before and had never come close for the simple reason we had played by the rules and the winning scores were -16 to -19. This time was the first first time the Event Coordinator and the Head Pro had spotters on the course and markers with each group (they filled out the scorecard and marked whose tee-shot was used). Also, the event required proof of handicaps to be eligible for the top prize.

Our team shoots 60 (-12) with a couple long putts and a stupid chip-in. We are sure we didn't win anything except a closet to the hole prize. I sign our card with the Marker and turn into the Pro and he says, "Congrats, leaders in the clubhouse." I know I had a dumb-arse look on my face. Pro said it was amazing how the scores increased from prior years when Markers and Spotters where used.

We won the trip to Pebble which was the most expensive "free" trip ever. We won airline vouchers but had to pay the tournament fee and hotel bill, but that was only slightly more than the bar bills and the shopping our wives did. That shite left a scar.

I despise cheaters as much as the next golfer, but if you are playing in a scramble to win you are often missing the purpose of the tournament. As for cheating in a 4-ball, some teams can play bad on Sat. and catch lightening in a bottle on Sunday. It’s the repeat offenders that make my blood boil. If someone repeatedly catches lightening in a bottle on Sunday every year at a tourney that is beyond frustrating.

In charity scrambles I really try to mix up my team for networking. It produces a lot of bad teams. I actually try to work on different parts of my game and obviously don’t lay up in situations where I normally would.

In money scrambles I’ve perceived sandbagging on Saturday but that happens in other flighted events and will continue to happen. Even those events I have fun and if I win money great. Just glad to be outdoors playing a round or two.

I played in a charity scramble event with a former European Tour Player. I was low singles at the time.

We lost to the WM Head football coach and an assistant.

No problem - we drank a ton of beer, bought a bunch of auction items and helped raise money for for a good cause.

It was a great day other than the pencil whipping part.

Won a 3 man recently and was accused of cheating even though we were randomly paired with another team. 30+ teams. We didn’t have a team skill wise on the top 20 but we made a ton of long putts and the course played tough that day. Shot -11 and won when we expected 14 or 15 under would win it. Team consisted of my buddy who’s a 10, my uncle who can’t break 100, and me who just started back playing golf (was an 8 in my prime by around a 15 time of tourney). Other teams couldn’t believe we won but we turned in our card before half the other teams and nobody thought before tourney such a low score would win.

Don Shows could play... I played with him in a FCA Scramble that Louisiana Tech put on. It was Me, Shows, a Tech Golfer, and the Womens Basketball coach at ULM at the time. Tourney was held at Calvert Crossing.

My club typically does schambles and you get 80% of your handicap. They have a mark on each hole that you are getting a stroke. Key is that it is not pre-flighted. You play and turn your score in and they put them on the board. After everyone has turned in the scores they list the teams top to bottom and drawn lines for pay out. 1, 2, 3 then 9, 10 ,11 and so on but when there are ties those numbers change (1 pays the same as 9 in this example). So you come in complaining about missing a putt and it turns out that miss put you at 9 instead of 8 and you win money. Then you're glad you missed that putt.

Played in a scramble once and saw a guy on an adjacent green literally throw his coin about ten feet from where the ball was. I was a guest in another state and my friends just shook their heads and said that's probably the least of what other teams were doing.

Very, very sad.

If it's an oilfield golf scramble, I don't really care, cheating is basically "normal".

If it's a stroke play club tournament, that's pretty shitty .

In scrambles, it’s a given that teams are going to cheat. It really sucks. I don’t even try to win anymore. Just enjoy time with your team and try to make some good shots. I use it a practice time. Let the whole team hit and if there is a good one, try that trap knockdown wedge shot or the bump and run. Before the round look for the fattest, drunkest a-hole with the worst swing, he will usually win the long drive before it even begins

Yesterday we were second.

Several groups not reported.
Shotgun start.
Finally after 1 hour of waiting 5 groups finally posted.

We were no longer second.

This is rampant at the Conventions for the Louisiana National Guard every year. I could hand pick a team and they would still be 5 shots out at the end of it.

My Buddy and I, "who play them where they lie", learned real quick not to make beer bets with people we had never seen play, often they reposition their ball or they do not count every actual stroke

Playing Marcus Point in the morning

Shows wasn't a bad golfer, but he could (and would) cheat with the best of them. He had a sharp No. 2...

What’s the BR Open story? I’ve seen it mentioned here several times but have no idea what happened.

Only instance I saw that day where he tried, was on hole #7 we made par, he went to the spot where he would've hit his chip from in a stroke play event and hit the chip "as practice." Since we had a mulligan each, he tried to use it once his chip went in. The rest of us told him we didn't feel comfortable with that, since we had decided not to take the mulligan on the birdie putt and hole out for the par. He tried to get us to use his birdie for the next two holes before he finally dropped it.

Side story... this would've been in 2005 when we played. The previous year WM lost to Evangel on a failed 2-point conversion in the dome. So somewhere through the round, after the above incident, I was trying to decide between an 8 or 9 iron into the green. I ended up choosing the 8 and hit it long... he turns and says, in a sarcastic manner, "guess you should've gone with the 9." I replied... "guess you should've kicked the extra point." He kept to himself for the most part after that.

I would assume that most of my high school coaches would be bad-average at golf but 90% would cheat. Not sure why but I think high school football coaches would cheat at a drastically higher rate than most professions. Except for maybe oil field baws, I'm sure they cheat the most

Talk around the locker room was that someone WD'd after 9 holes the 1st day(because they were playing terrible for their standards apparently). Well, this person took his own scorecard from his playing partners and tried to turn in a 64 well after everyone else had turned their scores in. Forged signatures and all. Tried to legitimately turn a score in as round 1 leader.
