The whole area is thick tall grass. He lines his shot up and steps wide and around to avoid causing the ball to wobble in that tall shite
He didnt walk back and forth 15x to trample the area and he steps on rootball

Did Hatton or Scottie say anything?
Obvious rules violations are usually handled by the group.
3 players and 3 caddies were ok with it?

It will be harsh if it gets called. I think what will get him isn’t improving his lie, but stepping on the grass that *could* have affected his backswing.
It’s definitely not outrageous to assume he was stepping there to make sure he didn’t cause the ball to move, but it’s still against the rules.

The last step he did as he stepped up to hit the ball was the one that got him.
That last steps was the absolute nail in the coffin

Trying to find a video of it but not seeing anything. Wyndham Clark 100% improved his lie in the fescue at the US Open. Was really surprised they didn't penalize him. He was clearly stepping behind his ball in the tall grass.
Not even close to deserving a penalty. The threw it down and it went like 10 yards. bad etiquette but not penalty worthy.

Nah
It all falls under the same rule buts it’s worded “improving you lie, area of stance or swing, or line of play.”
Stepping on that grass would be improving your area of swing, not the lie.

Would love to see the same situation happen to a euro player. Bet they magically don't call it.

Def a risky move by Bryson.
I suspect he will come out tomorrow more locked in than ever before…..
Will make for a fun Saturday and Sunday!!

Insane call. Hope Bryson plays and laps the field.

Never would have been called on Rory, Rose, Fleetwood, or even Scotty

It for sure looks bad. I don’t even know if he actually needed to do it based on his practice swings. Also wild they can make the ruling but not know 100% he improved anything for his backswing. They are just assuming he did based on the video but don’t have the angle to tell if it actually helped him. But will sure make the next few rounds more entertaining. Geaux Sam!

Bryson is 3 back going into round 3 of a major. There is nothing that will keep him from teeing off tomorrow.
Intent has nothing to do with the ruling. The only question is did he improve his lie or swing path. They said yes so they stroked him. The reason or non reason does not matter.

Just saw the video. Absolutely wild that was accessed a penalty
Legit no way of them knowing he improved his lie. Wasn’t rooting for Bryson prior to this but I am now.
This new Brit guy the golf channel just brought on to talk about it is an absolute clown. Just destroying Bryson for his behavior with the rules official and saying he has victim mentality and should be disgraced. What a joke.

The rule applies for unintentionally improving your lie. So whether he did it on purpose or not is irrelevant to the ruling. I’m ok with it as long as they are going to enforce it on the rest of the field.

I haven't trusted the British since the Tea Party .
Seriously, there are a lot of bad rules in golf.
I don't believe that Bryson did anything intentionally. He is definitely a analytical guy and was trying to look at all options available.
The ruling is done, so he needs to refocus and do his best.

But there is zero proof it helped him. It’s just a gut feeling ruling. It’s a “we think this helped you” type of ruling. May as well be women’s gymnastic judges after this.

Sure. Was there a rules official right close by him on #5 when it happened? Asking because I genuinely don’t know. If not, if this penalty comes from just the video or from an official that wasn’t close by, there’s no way to clearly say he even accidentally improved it.
