NOLA.com

The highlights:

1. The Zurich is submitting a bid for one of the final 4 slots on the PGA Tour for 2028.

2. It would not be a team event.

3. There are 14 candidates being considered. St. Jude has pulled out of consideration.

4. Moneywise, the ForeKids bid falls short, but the Tour is said to consider other factors as well.

5. If they fail (which is expected) they may try to get a Champions Tour event instead of a non-tour challenger event.

I still think that the "challenger series" will not happen. There's no reason to try to start a new tour as a minor league circuit when Korn Fery handles that job just fine. It would be smarter and cheaper just to declare that tour as the "challenger tour" and focus on the actual Tour.

I’d personally rather see a challenger tour event than a senior tour event. I don’t see the Zurich getting one of the final 4 slots as much as I enjoy the tournament and course.

But it’s not my money.

I agree I don’t see the Challenger tour really happening. Maybe a few spots cause sponsors are not gonna wanna pay for that.

I’m not sure what will be the difference between the Challenger series model and the current Korn Ferry. What I’m hearing is that the Championship series events will have so many exemptions that the fields will be larger than I would have expected. I think the players are pushing for a Championship series model that is limited to 12 or so big money events and many ways to guarantee entry. I’m concerned that this leaves the other events like the Zurich with slim pickings.

As a fan of seeing a competitive field in NOLA I’m not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I've heard the exact opposite...that the players are concerned that the Tour has too few events and they want the ability to play in other events not considered tier 1.

I'll take a senior event. Gotta think they will get some names from LIV. I doubt the champions tour will be as strict on LIV guys as the regular tour is.

If you want to see golf at TPC Louisiana die, put a Senior Tour event there.

What makes you say that?

Because the Sr Tour events are historically poorly attended and the guys playing on that tour now have very little connection with the patrons 40yo and younger.

And you think a tournament featuring a bunch of players who will never amount to anything will do any better? I'd rather see former stars play golf than guys who are on the fast track to club pro play golf.

That's not going to be any different than a challenger's tour event.

People bitch about the weak field without any big names already. It's going to be WAY worse on that front if it's a challenger tour event.

My kid is gonna be so disappointed when this event inevitably just goes away.

Honestly, the biggest issue with Challenger events is the number of exemptions they are giving out. It would be a cool thing if you could see bigger name guys like Max Homa and Joel Dahmen going against up and coming guys. It wouldn't be much different than watching a Valspar/John Deere type of field. They gave so many exemptions for things like career money that it's now going to be a KFT event.

I'm over 40 and would gladly attend but I'm just one guy. My group of friends would probably come too. Would still like to hear tzimme's reasoning.
