Zach Johnson says hello from Augusta National.

I agree everyone should advance the ball as far as they can with each shot unless there are penalty areas or dense trees in the dispersion of the shot.

It sounded like she had a lie that was not standard for her best 9 wood. The lie often dictates the limits of the shot rather than the raw distance.

I’m not a great player with majors so I respect boundaries and hazards for the most part IF a decent strike might not carry.

This is the correct answer, but after she told him a 2nd time that she didn’t want to go for it he pressed her.

Here is the hole, her ball was beyond the last tree on the right. the blue line represents her chosen line the yellow line is the coaches line.

Yeah I don't get that.. the game is hard enough as it is.. then you add the pressure of a match/tournament with state implications on top of that? Yeah the shot becomes immensely harder and then an coach is telling you what your gut was saying not to do... That was shot was destined to fail...

Coach has to understand HE ain't having to make that shot..

At the state qualifying tournament my kid hit a ball into, the right rough on a par 5. I saw the lie it was in top of some still thick layer over grass. My kids gets to ball and tells the coach they want to hit a 8 iron across the far left corner of a pond carry of 100 yards kid hits 8 about 130. Coach says hit your 9 wood over a more aggressive line so you can have a shorter wedge into an elevated green surrounded by bunkers in the front Kids says I really want to hit the 8, coach keeps on and pressures kid into, hitting the wood. Ball goes in the lake. Kid drops and again coach tells kid to take a wood and hit it over the entire lake from rough and ball goes in again. Kid took a 9, and missed the playoff for the last spot by 4 shots. How ad should I be. Cause i’m send an email, to,the AD mad.

Sounds like you need to back off dude. It's a fricking high school golf tournament, not the US Open. Sounds like you want to blame someone for your daughter's poor shots.

She's a freshman, she will have plenty more opportunities.

I say this as a dad who is probably way more competitive than you are- but you need to chill out. Its fricking kids' sports

Look you are just going to get shite on here. Most people think high school golf is like football and think listening to the coach is gospel etc etc

Others that may know will still troll you (look at CPA)

Stay calm, make it a learning moment, and move forward. Seems like you already understand the high school golf world and coaches don’t know anything so you are fine. Bring this story to her actual golf coach and seek his advice

As someone that was a HS Golf coach while my daughter was in school I can say that this is pretty damn accurate... Can't tell you how many matches that some of the other coaches where they were primarily other sport coaches and most had extremely basic knowledge of the game..
Ours for both golf and tennis was the basketball coach

He was basically a drunk. At state he had no clue how to read a draw and what meant what for where matches were etc. It was a disaster

IF I’m in trouble, I never aim at trouble.

She still most likely would have had a birdie putt playing the “next shot on grass” line.

Hero shots can work, but the blue line would have no doubles.

So the coaches line was a layup as well, not even a go for the green shot? According to that it's like a 30 yard difference and possibly brings the bunker in play too if she cooks it Not even remotely worth going with a wood there.

My high school golf "coach" was the basketball coach that didn't even play golf. Thankfully all he did was order our shirts ad bags and scheduled travel and never once tried to coach us.

Not sure why people are giving you shite. You daughter got some bad coaching. perfectly reasonable to be upset. But like I say, she's a Freshman, she'll have other chances. And in fairness, that wasn't the only hole that cost her.

If the blue is 100 yards and my student hits 8 iron 130, it’s not out the realm to think a 9 wood would travel through rough better than a game improvement iron allowing you to line up right of the yellow.

30 yards is a ton for females depending on what the actual yardage would be. Going from 70-100 yards would take off tons of height and spin to stop it in green. If there is a chance to get that much closer, I’m giving that advice.

If 30 yards is a ton then that makes the risky shot even worse. A 9 wood out of a tricky lie that she has already told you twice she doesn't want to hit is not the play. As the results showed.

What if it works and she makes birdie or two putt par? Can’t be result oriented in golf. Sometimes the risk is greater than the reward sometimes it isn’t.

Has she read “Every Shot Counts” by Mark Brodie?

It really breaks down the risk/reward of various situations.

Penalty areas and dense trees deserve respect.
If she’s a decent bunker player, that can be a good play too.

From a questionable lie with a hazard to carry, I think the play is to decide which club you will carry the water with a vast majority of the time.

Golf might be the best sport to use analytics over the course of a season.

Seems like you came here for vindication as opposed to advice on how to handle this.

His line might be a little longer but much better IMO (at least for my ball flight). Larger landing area, less penalty if you pull, push or hit it long.

I'd start it at just off those two trees short of the right side bunker

Yes it does for golf and tennis…. High level players are wasting their time playing most high school events and the coach should have some understanding of that and what’s going on

No, it doesn’t.

I was one of the best golfers in my home state as a teenager on a team with 8 future D1 players, including the best kid in the country in the year ahead of me (and yes, all of us played AJGA, all the USGA stuff, the whole deal). Every single one of us had to listen to our coach in team golf.

Even at the Ryder Cup level, players listen to captains - if a hole is playing a certain way, situational golf, who pairs well together, so on and so on.

If you think the coach made the wrong call, then have a direct conversation with the guy and tell him why. Don’t be a bitch about it.

I think the coach gave your daughter really bad advice on the shot.

Not sure how you handle the coach relationship going forward. Lots of factors that come into play. IMO, I would try to avoid the "blame the coach" path (even though he's very much at fault) since she's young and you wouldn't want to foster a blame mentality.

Hopefully, someday you (and she) will be able to look back on this as a growth event.
