At the state qualifying tournament my kid hit a ball into, the right rough on a par 5. I saw the lie it was in top of some still thick layer over grass. My kids gets to ball and tells the coach they want to hit a 8 iron across the far left corner of a pond carry of 100 yards kid hits 8 about 130. Coach says hit your 9 wood over a more aggressive line so you can have a shorter wedge into an elevated green surrounded by bunkers in the front Kids says I really want to hit the 8, coach keeps on and pressures kid into, hitting the wood. Ball goes in the lake. Kid drops and again coach tells kid to take a wood and hit it over the entire lake from rough and ball goes in again. Kid took a 9, and missed the playoff for the last spot by 4 shots. How ad should I be. Cause i’m send an email, to,the AD mad.

Sorry I know TLDR

His ball his responsibility. There is a reason people say trust your gut. Tell your son to grow a pair and stand up for his thought process/game. Not the answer you want and tough learning experience for your son.

It was my daughter who’s 15 being told what to do by a 40 year old man. A little different situation. I have caddied some and if a person I caddied for told me a second time they wanted to hit a certain shot I wouldn’t keep pushing. Cause it’s clear they can’t commit to the shot I suggested.

That’s tough. I doubt her coach was trying to screw her over intentionally so give him some grace on that. Realistically though, a player knows their yardages and bailouts way better than a coach so if you wanted to have a conversation with the coach, that could be a talking point. As she is 15 years old, I’d imagine she has a few more years to compete so you can use this as a teaching moment to be a little more assertive if there is a shot she wants to hit.

I get it she is responsible for her ball, but here is some background info cause i dint want to fill OP with more text. She was our PGA Section Female Player of the year for 12-15 year olds and won 4 of 5 starts in 18 hole tournaments. She also qualified for the NB3 regional and played in other 2 and 3 day out of state tournaments, So why should a history teacher say shite to her.

This is a lesson. Player has the final decision.

Don’t be that guy. It’s amateur golf and likely a volunteer coach. There’s no guarantee that the 8 iron wasn’t going in the water, too.

Learning lesson for a 15 year old to trust her own gut and own her own decision-making. Tough time for that lesson to sink in, but it will do more positive in the long run than not.

And nobody gives a shite about the all-region whatever bullshite. That doesn't make her special or beyond reproach on her team.

If you really think you should say something, then cool off for a few weeks, then have an objective, rational conversation with the coach. A good AD would rightly tell you to frick off if you communicated with them directly on something like this.

A good coach wouldn’t do that. Golf is such a mental game. We need to hit the shot we’re confident in.

Did she not drop where it entered the hazard or back on the line? Why was she in the rough again? It should have been a completely different shot, unless the first shot was right next to the lake maybe.

She dropped closer to the pond but was still in grass that was over my shoes. Red penalty area, but gong backwards on the same line would have been where she hit the first one in from. Any decent golfer would have known by looking at the grass in the rough that it was juicy and thick like J. Lo. The only thing that was gonna overcome it was loft.

you need to tell her don’t listen to a single thing the HS coach says. Tell her to be respectful but don’t listen

That goes for any high level golfer or tennis player who has a high school “coach” try and teach them

I also wouldn’t feel bad to talk to the AD and explain the situation of the level of your daughter and how high school play isn’t really the pinnacle of her sport etc etc
Be nice, don’t be an arse about it, but talking isn’t going to hurt anything

Yes it does for golf and tennis…. High level players are wasting their time playing most high school events and the coach should have some understanding of that and what’s going on

Wtf are you blabbing about?

No offense to the OP but if his daughter can’t qualify for the Louisiana high school state tournament she’s not “high level”

She ain’t from Louisiana hoss if it’s the state qualifying tournament right now….Also she is a freshman…..also you miss the part about being PGA Section player of the year?

Regardless of your futility, the point stands. If you have a high level junior in a sport such as golf, you should be up front and respectful to the coach/AD that high school team isn’t your avenue of practice, instruction or competition. You will play when the schedule works and play the tournaments that matter for state

If the coach or AD doesn’t agree with that, you respectfully understand and don’t play

Would you consider Sam burns a high level golfer? Pat Reed?
Brooks koepka? Etc etc

Because they weren’t playing the us open at 15. They were playing junior golf at the level of the OPs daughter you clown

OP, best person to talk to will be Roy from here. He can fill you in how he handles this with his daughter. I’m not even sure if she plays for her high school team

He was wrong but didn't screw her over. She screwed herself over hitting it in the crap, that's golf.

We do summer tournaments in our PGA Section and on Golf Week Tour have yet to do AJGA but will likely try to do some, qualifiers this coming summer. College coaches do not value HS golf other than you played and were a good teamate and kept your grades upl It just shows the ability to do both at the same time. As for practice at the HS the season started Aug 1st and ended this week. Her team had a total of 5 practices. There were some coach cancelled cause it was to hot. Her swing coach says she is likely looking at Division II and maybe Division I but not at the high end of DI. Now that her body has matured we are gonna start speed trading with the Stack System this winter. If she can add about 30-40 yards off the tee by next summer that projection could change.
