How important do you consider the ball you play as a mid-handicap?

I'm sure this has been discussed plenty. I've been playing regularly for almost a year now. I got some confidence in the past and bought quality balls once, then swiftly lost them all to the woods and have since been playing Titleist TruFeel. I bought a few dozen TP5x on sale a few months back, but just kept them on the shelf as I can easily lose several balls a round.

In any case, I played Saturday and used the TruFeel on the front 9 and had a terrible start. I think I hit 2 fairways and chipping was disappointing. I had a sleeve of the TP5x's and just said the hell with it on the back 9. I missed 1 fairway the rest of the day and I was easily 15+ yds further than my normal drive. I was a lob wedge in where I could sometimes be a 9/PW. Short-sided chips stayed put for chances at an up and down. Ended up with 3 over on the back 9.

In the past, I wasn't good enough to really take advantage of the better ball. Now hovering just above a 12 handicap, I'm really thinking it can unlock a few strokes for me. I could have just warmed up and figured something out on the back 9. But it was vastly different and consistent through the whole back.

They make a pretty big difference but if you are losing multiple balls a round I would definitely hold off on the more premium balls. Might would take a look at some of the maxfli tour balls, better quality with a good price point until you are comfortable not losing multiple per round. Best thing is to just get used to one ball for short game to know the feel and results you can expect.

I'm still pretty new to all this myself, but I have now gotten to where I absolutely notice the difference in ball characteristics - spin specifically.

The callaway supersoft and the wilson duosoft are well constructed, durable and cost-effective. They are incredibly low-spin off the driver, but they aren't going to check up very well on shots into the green.

Going with a MINT mid-upper tier ball like AVX, Maxli Tour, TPX, Chromesoft from somewhere like LostGolfBalls.com is the way to go IMO

I recognize a really bad slice or hook isn't going to be fixed by a ball. I'll definitely have an issue here or there and just get a bad swing off the tee. But there are times where I have felt it wasn't awful and the ball drifts a bit hits a hill and bounces away into the woods (there's a few holes on my course that offer no forgiveness for a miss right). I found the lower spin TP5x ended up as a slight fade in my worst drive and dead straight all others. Could have just been me staying within myself and focusing.

I had 2 birdies on the back 9 on 20-30 yard pitch shots to an elevated green that stopped within a few yards of where it landed, where I know my regular ball would have rolled another 15'. That plus the extra driver length made a big difference. Now I can probably go out tomorrow and hook 4 in a row into the woods and realize my wallet can't take this

The ball is the only thing you use on every shot. It’s important.

I get MINT AVX by the dz for around $22 from Lostgolfballs.com. Catch em on a flash sale. Ill buy the whole years worth to get the free shipping as well.

OP, get a good 3 piece ball. Brand doesn't batter so much for your game right now, but as you improve, you'll want to start tinkering with different ones.

If you must have new, try Snell balls. Great option and I think they do a test kit to give you the option of trying different balls.

Played a full round at beaver creek with one vice “drive” ball.
Feel pretty good about my game!

I’ve been playing Maxfli Tours for a couple weeks. Was suspicious of it basically being a half price (if you buy 4 dozen at a time) ProV1 propaganda, but they do play really similar, especially green side.

It was an impulse buy and just doing a little reading, I think the Tour X better suits me. But the the Tour is definitely convincing me to just find the right Maxfli and call it good given their price.

Don’t listen to these people, the ball doesn’t matter that much. People who blame bad results on the ball are people you don’t want to play with. Good shots are good shots and bad shots are bad shots, ball ain’t gonna change that
