Handicap based on tourney scores.

Only correct answer.
New people obvious exception with no tournament.

I've been anywhere from a 12-16 over the last 10+ years, and I've broken 80 maybe twice in that time, none in down/putt out style tournaments.
Same. I’ve only ever broken 80 3 times, and it’s random as frick. If I could “magically” bust out some 77’s.... ever. I’d do it in a heartbeat. No way in hell anyone is that much of a gamer to go 8 under handicap consistently.

Start using tournament rounds as handicap.
It’ll be easier to flush the sandbagged out.
My guess is that if you do this, he’ll show pretty poorly in 3 tournaments and then win one. Once a bagger, always a bagger.

Holt bump Batman.

Simplest explanation: he doesn't log his low rounds specifically to clean house during tournaments.

So you too approach and play "friendly" rounds differently than you do tournament rounds. Knowing that, would you consider yourself a "sandbagger"?

I've been out of the golf industry for a number of years now but play in pool leagues where handicaps are determined in a similar fashion to golf handicaps. Most players play different, more wreckless, more offensive and less defensive in regular league play than in tournaments. But the fact that your handicap is determined by your best 10 scores of your recent 20 rounds should basically make it impossible to beat your handicap by that much.

In pool it's a little easier to out perform your handicap, depending on your rating.

Caps are supposed to be your top potential for this reason.. a 13 dropping 77s on the reg is not a 13

At my club they track each tourney and will adjust the cap for people who are 3 strokes better for 3 tournies

What's the point of sandbagging, what is to be gained?

I don't get sandbagging either. I want my handicap as low as possible, because I use it as a barometer for how good I'm playing, and how good I am.

As a 13 index, I'm suspicious of a 77.

A handicap is 85% of your best 10 of last 20 rounds.

83 to 100 is the range of my last 20.

I have shot 39 on 9, but breaking 80 as a 13 index is suspicious. My course is a 137 slope, course rating 72 from white tees.

Only way I see myself shooting 77 is at an easy course with maybe a 119 slope and 69 course rating.

I'm a 14.7(well 13.6 now) and just shot a 79. Now it is my home course and have gotten close before but it isn't impossible. Our slope rating is only 124 from the blues.
I followed it up with a 92 the next day.

What’s the backstory? OP had enough of the sandbaggers and decided to become one himself?

I had a career round Saturday and shot 78 (net 62) to win our Masters tournament. If I have another low round and beat my cap by 3 or more strokes at our PGA in May then I’ll accept the title of “sandbaggger,” and would not have an issue with being adjusted for the US Open.

My whole point of this thread was to figure out how to adjust guys that “go low” and beat their cap by 3 or more in consecutive tournaments and/or multiple times over a couple of major tournament seasons.

What's your next lowest round in your last 20?

Highest handicap I have ever seen break 80 was an 11. Highest I've ever seen break 80 in a tourney format is a 8.

A 16 doing it, in a tourney format, in the conditions from this weekend would be impossible.

That is the round of a lifetime for a 16.

Pope of Slope would calculate the probability of a 16 shooting 78 at at least 1 in 10,000.

If you do it twice in a row, it’s powerball odds.

At the end of the day, clubs should focus on upgraded tee gifts for everyone who enters and just a trophy for the winners.
