Handicaps should flight you and then it’s straight up from there. Someone getting 4 or 5 or even 6 pops in a 9 hole match within the same flight is lunacy. Especially for a tournament that is usually 500 to 1000 entry per team.

If the percentages of handicaps are taken as they should, 5 or 6 would be a rarity. You’re talking a 15+ stroke difference between 2 players that somehow ended up in the same flight.

Different side of the same coin… lots of people will avoid a $500-1000 M/G if they get no strokes at all. For example, a 3 and a 5 playing off scratches paired together when they should be getting just 1 or 2 for 9 holes. It would deter way more people.

Ours is up to $1800.

We do not allow more than a 7 shot difference in partners..

We had witnessed some very fine golf played by 15s paired with a scratch/plus player.

This is how we do it as well. So if a 10 plays with a scratch, he gets adjusted down to a 7.

I tend to agree with you OP.

But I also don't put a lot of worry into that tournament. I like it because I get to spend some quality time with a buddy that I don't play a lot with.

The Houstonian in Sugarland (now Blackhawk) use to have some awesome member guest tournaments.

They would blow a horn for lunch and everyone would meet under the giant tree for a great fried chicken lunch , it was first class. Then go back to golf.

Afterwards a foot joy rep would fit you and give you a new pair of golf shoes and other high end goodies.

If you’re not cheating on these sort of events, you ain’t trying. Stopped playing scramble and match play group events years ago. People suck.

That’s how 90% of participants look at these so they don’t want to stir the pot or be ruffled up to much by the other 10% cheating their arse off.

There’s no place for cheating in golf.

Captain and Mate? Flight by handicap and then straight up, no strokes.

Best ball? Flight by handicap and then give strokes to individual golfers based on their handicap.

Our member member does that. Flighted groups and straight up within each group, no pops

But member guests flights it and then allows pops and yes it can be a mess. I no longer play the member guest because of this and other reasons, such as it being expensive as frick and they always put it on Masters weekend which sucks

I was playing a guy I had to give 8 strokes to in a MG.

I shot 39 or so.

He shot 37. So net 29.

It’s happened enough that I sort of don’t do expensive MG anymore.

I played a 15 once whose partner was plus 1. Between a great club player and a guy with 7 shots, it was not possible to beat them even playing decently.

Both those teams won the flight. The last one won it all.

Interesting thread. I’m playing in my member guest this week. I’m just looking to have fun. Have no expectations we will win a match. I’m a 20 and my guest is a 4, but my handicap is capped at 14 for the event. He’s very good so I expect him to have a chance to make some cash in the range games, horse race, etc. I’ll contribute a few pars on each nine if I’m lucky. Open bar for three days / will have to closely mange that!

“I’ve never played this well before.”

“Made some changes recently. It’s sort of working now.”

“I just seem to play better under some pressure.”

“With a partner, I’m able to let it go more.”

I’ve heard all of these over the years.

I see both sides of this. Most tournaments I’ve played in have a player dispersion of 10 handicap points difference max. 7 would be more fair like others have said. I usually come into these tournaments between a 4-7. I’ve had guys complain that I’m sandbagging when I shoot even or -1 but then the next 9 hole match I post 42/43. I’m a streaky golfer who can get absolutely red hot as a longer hitter. But when it’s off it’s really off. There’s other older players I feel like that are 3 or 4 handicaps who just keep it in front of the hole and their scores are more consistent than mine will ever be. Kudos to them, but they are the same players who complain when they get beat. A nine hole match is not a representation of 18 holes and shite happens. The other thing is it’s match play, not stroke. In the end, have fun, it’s the whole reason we are out there. I look forward to the member guest events I play in every year. They are my favorite weekends, win or lose.

You are always gonna have guys that try to game the system when handicaps are involved, One year a guys guest claimed to be a 40, but all his rounds in GHIN were from about 4 months prior to a few weeks before tournament. It was pretty obvious what was going on. Now he was probably a 25 handicap but got 15 phantom strokes, They won the tourney. That guest has never returned to play.

I don’t play on member guest events anymore - or scrambles - just too much cheating.

Our club uses a 10 shot difference in partners and we use lowest handicap index in the last 12 months so guys don't jack their handicaps up a few weeks prior. Seems to have cut down on the cheating.

No tournament should ever be more than 1/2 handicaps. Otherwise it is gambling and there are tons of cheaters at gambling.

I was told recently,”there are two groups of players in a member guest- cheaters and losers!”
