Have we talked about Matt Kuchar paying his caddy $5k after his win at Mayakoba?

Matt Kuchar won $1.3 million at Mayakoba this fall. It was an impressive feat, and he had a backup caddy on the bag. No one thought anything of it until fellow PGA Tour Pro Tom Gillis made mention of it last week:

Even better. Who's gonna b the one to identify the player the paid his caddy 3k after winning a PGA tour event last fall???

Been in direct contact with El Tucan now for a few days. He did receive a total of 5k. Not 3k after tournament. Still only 0.0023% percent of check. Fortunately there's no more middle man. Stay tuned hopefully he gets paid properly

This understandably drew outrage, and even though it wasn't the $3000 originally reported, Kuch only paying his caddy .4% of his winnings is absolutely absurd (if true, which it looks like might be the case). Hopefully Kuch is willing to dish out a little bit more to the guy now that this has come to light. 50k, which seems like fair compensation IMO, could be a life changing amount of money for this guy.

I thought caddies on tour were something like $200 a loup and 5%-10% of winnings.

What's the protocol for payment on tour? Like is Kuch getting back to the truck and pulling out a check and doing some back on the envelope math?

Odds he forgot to carry the 1?

Did the backup caddie help Kuch map the course or did he just carry the bag and clean the golf balls? How much could he even help with club selection?

If the guy just carried the bag for 4 days 5k is a fair amount.

You also have to remember that tour caddies pay for flights, hotel rooms and food during the year.

This local caddie had none of these expenses.

Still should have been paid more than 5k, but tour caddies get paid because of the expenses they incur throughout the year.

Kuchar has made almost 50 mil just on course. 30k would have changed that guys life. Would 5% be "fair" if he did more carrying than anything? Maybe, but sometimes it's just about doing the right thing.

5k for what would be 30 hours of work if all he did was carry the bag.

Not too bad.

Standard is 10% for your caddy and 5% for a local. The majority of people on or related to the tour have said its a terrible look if true.

I’m not saying he should have gotten the full 130k. I get that. But even 30-50k would have been fine.

Let me offer a different perspective. Say someone wins the lottery. Now, all of a sudden, you have every known and unknown relative, friend, associate, ex-gf, etc. reaching with their hand out. Everyone's pressuring you for a piece. Possibly, you, or your family, get threatened in some way in the pursuit of a payday. Now that I've set the table for you, imagine if it gets found out that this local yocal suddenly is $130,000 richer. I'm not saying this is what happened, but MK is one the finest, stand-up guys on the Tour. Is it possible that he and the local caddie had an agreement to not disclose the actual payment he received? This scenario could make sense to me. Just a perspective, nothing factual.

If I’m your maid, and then you win the lottery, I’m absolutely expecting a raise.

But this is the tour standard. When you have Tour guys or caddies calling you out, it’s not a good look.

Dawgsontop:

Off-topic, but, perhaps show me some good courses in Atlanta area when it's warmer?

Trying to see as many courses as possible before my wife pops out the first kid and my game goes on hiatus again. So as many tourneys, qualifiers, what have you until the end of summer for me.

(I just took 5 months off from golfing -- I know, crazy, right? -- I blew it up at the USGA Mid-Am Qualifier and took a break, now getting back into it and making some serious swing changes, hopefully for the better)

Yeah it’s usually a flat fee for the week of $750-1k or so plus 5% of winnings outside top 10 and some pre negotiated rate around 10% for top 10.

The scenario I brought up was originally brought up by Tour guys. To a man, every Tour player I've heard discuss this, on PGA Tour radio, has supported this "theory" and definitely supported Kuch. Only person I've heard make waves about it is Tom Gillis. And who tf is Tom Gillis??

Apparently he has been known to have "alligator arms" when it comes to tipping and also other tour player(s)/caddies chimed in that his good-guy facade is a sham.

Not saying all of that is truth but what I read in the conversations on twitter

0%, Kuch doesn't seem like an idiot and only an idiot would make that mistake.

That would suck. I like Kuch or at least his persona.

I honestly don't get the story here. Are we to expect rich people to simply spend money because they can? Do we even know the truth? One week of negative rumors supersedes years worth of reputation?

If the caddie made a deal and Kuch honored it, what's the problem? Local caddie. Bag carrier only. I'm not going to pretend to know what's "fair" but even $3k (But wait, now it's $5k when Kuch publicly denies 3?) seems good. I don't trust Gillis in this at all. Starts shite without cause and changing his story just to save face it seems to me.

Simply put: If it's true, so fricking what? And I have no reason to even believe it's true based on the source and changing story.
