Breaking 90s

Finally started breaking 90s at Santa Maria and beaver creek from the blues. Playing some of my best golf, which makes me think: how the hell would one get even better?!
I guess I’m still having the occasional triple but it’s crazy the difference in playing from 80s- 100s but also from 70s to 80s.

I started keeping track of everything.. Fairways & Greens in Regulation along with # of putts ... Also i had to come to terms with something in the bag is going to let me down.. If it's driver use 7w .. Long irons hit softer shots with hybrid and so on an so forth.. It's all about minimizing damage..
Hell this weekend I played 3 rounds.. Fri,Sat & Sun.. Struggled to get off the tee on Friday made a switch to my 7w had to play longer shots and I still managed an 82 .. Sat the driver decided it was ok for me to hit and I ended up with a 79.. Sunday back to not hitting driver worth a shite but I adjusted and shot an 84.. Putting was failing me Sun.. Hit several greens and Reg and had several 3 putts... issue was I played Pelican Point Fri & Saturday in the afternoon when it was hot and dry.. Sunday Morning round was Greystone @ 7:15 so completely different conditions and greens...
Biggest thing is definitely keeping doubles and triples off the card.. and trying not to 3 putt on multiple holes.. Most aggravating thing for me was I was putting for birdie on the first 3 holes at Greystone Sunday morning and 3 putting each one..
most of my work now is Short game and shots 150 yards and in and trying to hit targets..
I also adding different shots with various clubs around the green.. 3 most used clubs are my 9i , 54 & 60( and this club is a very specific shot or sand)
Just takes some work and focus... and you'll get there.. So keep up the good work

figure out what's causing you to lose strokes. start there.
learn how to hit the ball farther.

#1 keep ball in play. Don’t take drops
#2 don’t 3 putt
#3 be able to chip well enough when you’re right around the green for a realistic opportunity to make the putt.
Learn to not swing all out when you’re 150yards and in. Get good at taking a bigger club and punching it up on the green or a 60% swing. Lot more accuracy and less chance of chunking or blading a ball.

I know low single digit HCs who aren't phenomenal putters and are not wedge wizards; I don't know any who are not long hitters off the tee
The same skilled golfer hitting 9i into greens as opposed to hitting 7i into greens will have a much easier time scoring lower with a 9i in his hand on the second shot

I do agree with driving distance and accuracy more than short game.
Having a 180 approach shot or even worse, a 180 approach shot after taking a drop is a lot worse than just have a 135 shot into the green. The latter will score better every time.
Learn to drive it long and keep it in play. The drive for show concept is complete idiocracy.

Hit it further and keep it on the course and watch the HC drop

My brother calls this birdies to bogey in 3 easy steps.

This is my game. I will take a 230 yard drive in the fairway all day long because my iron game will get me on the green, or at worst on the fringe for a little chip and run. My score goes up when I have to scramble from off the fairway.
I have found that on most courses, there only about 8 holes where a driver off the tee is the right club for me. The short par 4's are traps to entice you to hit the driver into trouble and I will just play for a good approach into the green.

Anyone who doesn't believe driver is the most impactful club in the bag just doesn't understand math.

There are even people now discussing the viability of adjusting the HC system based on length / swing speed.
We played Grand Bear a few weeks ago, the ones ups play 6700ish. At an 11 with an avg drive distance of maybe 220, I stood no chance against guys that are averaging 260+ as an 8 or 9.

Make more putts, make less doubles

I believe this to be mostly true, especially for sub 80 golfers. For us who just want to break 90 consistently, I think it's more about playing in and from the fairway with an average short game. Even with an inconsistent driver, I'm usually just a few bad approaches or chips from being 85-90 consistently.
Caveat: My opinion is that of a very average golfer.

I think thats kind of the OPs point. You can be average off the tee in length and accuracy and get to a 15 HC.
You won't get to a 5 being average off the tee no matter how good your short game is. Is there an exception to that, I'm sure, but the evidence is there, to be a low single digit (and stay there) you have to be better than average off the tee in length more than accuracy.

Believe it or not, the numbers show that distance gains have much more impact on higher handicaps than lower handicaps. You see a lot of videos where advice is given to just get it in the fairway. There's just too many things wrong with this generic advice
- It assumes you have a much greater chance to hit accurate shots with sub driver. Sure, variance is greatest with a driver, but variance is still pretty wide with the next clubs down. If you are going to work on your game to find a go-to tee club, you should just work on your driver.
- Fairways are just not that important in the amateur game, especially for high handicaps. The rough amateurs play in has a negligible impact on the approach
- You can still hit driver and play smart golf. Aim away from trouble even if it means aiming for the rough. If there is trouble on both sides, err to the lesser trouble. If there is equal trouble on both sides or there is more trouble reachable with driver, then you can readjust your choice.

This is the one that baffles me the most.
For all the people who say that driver is too erratic and that they have a better time putting the driver away, why don't they just take lessons and practice driver to the point that it's reliable enough to hit every time the hole warrants it?
Normalize grinding driver until it's a weapon.

Agreed, when I play with some of my friends that are 15-20's they lose the most strokes with erratic drives. If you're taking penalties off the tee it's really tough to not double or worse.

Too hot for that shite right now, but I agree.
I’m currently scoring much better when I avoid driver. It needs a lot of work.
