I agree.

Somewhere down the line it became "dumb" or seen as boorish to go the the driving range and actually practice driver.

Loads and loads of mid/high caps were brainwashed into thinking it was "smart" to put driver in the closet and instead of actually improving the area that needs the most improvement, they just resigned themselves to having to hit 2/3/4 clubs longer into every green. Instead of making bogey the "worst" score they would likely make on a hole, they just accepted that bogey would be the "normal" score with par being a bit of a surprise.

That or they just play up to the whites/reds.

So many golfers don't seem to grasp the fact that having the world's best short/putting game doesn't help all that much when you're forced to hit 5 iron or longer into every green. I have some buddies who will grind on the practice green for hours and never figure out that being a great putter doesn't really make all that much difference when you're consistently trying to save bogey and not double because it took you 4 strokes to get on the green.

It's not an aversion to learning how to hit the driver, but more about time to practice an focus on specific parts of the game. If a high handicappers tries be ok at all parts of their game they will always be a high handicappers.

If you hit your drive 280 yards in the fairway but then top your iron, the follow that up with a shot off the green, the hit a chip 10 feet from the hole, then 2 putt, you just doubled bogey on a great drive.

If I hit my drive 250, then hit my approach on the green or just off the green, chip to within 5 ft, one put, I made par or better if my approach is on the green and putting for birdie.

High HCers are not driving the ball 250 or 280 yards and most mid HCers aren't either and that's the point. Get to a point where you can drive the ball 250-280 yards and watch the strokes come off. if you're driving it averaging 190-220, you're not getting to single low digits. It is not happening.

People with a 225 avg drive distance can get to single digits but likely between 5-9.99 and it's hard to stay there consistently. Sure, you'll drop a 76-79 a few times per year and some 80's but you'll have stretches where you don't break 80 and you'll bounce back to an 11 and have to fight it back down.

You realize that a 250 yard drive is a LOT better than the vast majority of golfers, right?

The average 35 year old who can consistently hit it 250 and keep it in play is likely to be a mid-single digit handicap.

I would love to see this golfer who can drive the ball 280 yards straight but cant hit any other club in the bag. If you're this guy sure, practice short game and irons.

Again someone who can drive 250+ with decent accuracy isnt whats being discussed here. I'm talking about when someone drives the ball 200 yards and slices it off the planet, and the advice given to them is to just not play a driver and get better at short game. That player would 100% be better off learning to hit driver over almost anything else.

Also that's nice that you gave yourself PGA tour average chipping in your "short hitter" scenario.

Let's say you're playing a 430 yard par 4.

You hit your drive 280 on the fairway or just off the fairway, you have 150 in and are hitting a scoring iron into the green.

Same hole, you drive the ball 250, you're 180 out and have a mid to long iron in to the green.

Based on statistical probability, not the random outlier of topping an iron shot (you could top your driver just as easily), do you think your chances of hitting it closer to the hole are easier from 150 or from 180?

And as someone else pointed out, amateurs aren't chipping the ball 5 ft from the pin consistently, so it's kind of a silly scenario as if golfer A topping his iron shot into the green and golfer B chipping the ball to 5 feet for par is something to be expected regularly

More likely scenario, golfer who hits it 280 is more likely to hit the green and 2 putt, and golfer B is more likely to miss the green and not get up and down to save par.

Can we move up a set of tees?

I think I drive around 250 ish?
On 18 I hit a crappy pop up though, leaving me 225 from green.
I hit the best 5 wood of my life to the green, two putt par.
Been reliving that shot every night before bed.

I see some like this every round I play on public course. They can pound the ball off the tee but the rest of their game is inconsistent.

My guess is their range session is to hit driver.

Sure, but playing forward tees is still going to favor the longer hitter. But a dude carrying his driver 280 (nearly tour average carry distance) doesn't need to be playing forward tees. The back tees at my home course average around 430 on par 4s, which is why I chose that number

I am not looking to argue about golf here. There are different strategies that fit different skill sets. But sounds like my skill set is different than yours and my game is where it should be at this time.

Yes it easier to hit a green from 150 than 180, but for my game it's just a different club with the same swing.

You see a ~97th percentile driver every time you play a public course?

You just don't understand actual, proper course management.

I highly doubt you're regularly seeing guys who hit driver 280 straight but then consistently top and chunk every other club in the bag but even if he exists, I've already conceded that player probably should practice short game. That isnt remotely close to whats being discussed though.

3 of the last 4 times I have played I was placed in a group with at least one player that had a good driver game, and then struggled with the rest of their game.

Maybe I see a different variety of players because I play public courses as a single paired with other groups.
