A good friend of mine was let go from Audubon Friday and while there hasn’t been any public announcement yet, internally the Audubon Institute is seriously considering the closure of the golf club.

The closure of the club, founded in 1898, would be permanent in order to create more green space for the park. Admittedly, I’m not much of an activist or Facebooker, but please consider joining the group and signing the petition. I also sent an email to the CEO of the Institute and his contact info is in the group.

I’m not a member, but live nearby and would hate to see the course close permanently. I’m sure many of you here feel the same.

Hope it doesn't close. I enjoy playing that course.

Agreed. Very disappointing if true. Great place to play a 3 hr round.

I hope the terminations are related to short term income drop and they will staff up again soon.

Years ago, before the layout was totally redone, a local pro gave me his opinion on one problem that existed —- pressure from a handful of local tree huggers who viewed the course as a waste of space. He thought that the old layout could have been improved by removing a few trees. Removing or even trimming trees was essentially impossible due to community pressure.

This would be a real shame. Beautiful course in a beautiful area and they always maintain the course.

I joined the Facebook group and passed it to others. Hopefully this gains some traction.

I agree closing the course would be terrible. There is no shortage of park space in the city for people to go hang out in.

I don't understand why it closed in the first place. I assume it was to limit the spread but there have been more people on the course since it closed than I have ever seen while it was open. So they've had no revenue and still had larger groups that are closer together than if they continued to allow golfers on.

Yep, we take our kid to the playground(before Covid) and there is a ton of room for people to picnic, yoga, frisbee and whatever else they may want to do with "green space."

I just started playing again and was planning to get the annual pass once it opened back up.

I hate to say it but you are the problem. Just like everyone who lives in a neighborhood or near a golf course and doesn't support it but wants it open.

More green space? This stupid line pissed me off when those idiots were climbing the trees in City Park to halt that project. There is tons of green space in both Audubon and City Parks. What is lacking is affordable, decent public golf courses in the city. Audubon is something that should be championed by city officials, makes money, attracts a diverse group of golfers, easily walkable, etc.

Give them City Park South course and keep Audubon open.

He didn't mention any of it. Maybe he plays in a weekly game there or in all of their tournaments? Maybe he is a volunteer marshal? Maybe he sponsors a hole or water feature? I can only go off of what he wrote.

If all you are doing is playing cheap public round golf once a month or less then you are not really supporting it enough to keep it open.

How am I the problem? When it was open I played about once a week. If it were open during the shutdown it would have been more. GFY

All you said was you live nearby but are not a Member. That sounds like a problem to me. I can only go off of what you wrote.

Now I still question why anyone who plays there once a week and lives nearby wouldn't be a Member and have an Annual Pass.

Playing once a month for people with kids, jobs, etc is likely the norm for most people.

Which is one of the many reasons why many public courses don't need to exist.

I would also argue that most people play less than this even in prime months and play zero between September and March.
