60-90 yards out. Tight fairway lie. What club(s) are your options

This area absolutely killed my round yesterday. Twice I drove the ball to this distance and ended up with a double.

I have a natural "sweeper" swing, but these shots really get in my head on a tight lie because my fear is blading one. That's exactly what happened on the first one. The next one I didn't clip the ball cleanly and of course my leading edge dug into the earth behind the ball and it went about 20 yards. I can hit a wedge out of the fluffy stuff close to the pin all day long, but I have the fricking yips when it's sitting on a tight lie.

Should I just start bumping an 8 iron from this range? Anyone else struggle mightily with this?

If it's in your head, it's in your head. I don't mind these shots since they are closer to a full swing. I would likely take my 60° for this shot since it has less bounce than my 56°. Focus on compressing the ball and let the club do the work.

This is why I like one of my wedges to be low bounce. The course I play has a good bit of tight lies so I have low bounce on my 60 degree and more forgiving bounce on my 56 degree. My club selection when in that range or closer usually comes down to the lie being tight or not.

With a sweeper from that distance, you’re more likely to shank especially if the ball is too far back in your stance.

Make sure it’s a little further up, stay more on your front foot, don’t neglect your lower body, and keep your hands moving left through the swing.

Those are my thoughts from that range.

Here’s a really good instructional video from Padraig Harrington.

60-85 I'm using my 56 and using the bounce. Dropping that clubhead and letting it kick off the hard ground. Opening the face just slightly and taking a confident swing. 85-95 I'm taking my 52 and doing the exact same thing. Probably not opening my face on the 52 but doing a confident 3/4 swing.

Happens a lot actually. Probably the most frustrating shot in golf after a great drive

Well it really depend.. if it's 80-90 I've found hitting my 50 degree wedge with a firm 9-3 swing works well.. keeps it low, on target and checks up for me..

60-70 I'm hitting a similar shot with my 54 degree wedge.. and this is usually the club with anything under 80 yards

my 60 is a bunker or emergency only type club.. while if I took a full swing with my 60 it would travel 90ish yards I don't do it because i can't tell you how many times i've cut right up under the damn ball and it goes nowhere

I do this some when there's a wide open run up to the green. I'm just not good enough at flighting wedges and controlling spin to be confident at those distances and then know what the ball is going to do when it hits (bounce once and check or run out).

Also, if you're driving it to that distance, sometimes it pays off to dial back to a FW metal/hybrid/driving iron tee shot to hold back and get into a full 8-PW shot into the green.

If you're a decent chipper and putter, and know your full 8-PW distances will be within 5-10 yards on distance, you can manage being off line laterally vs chunking or thinning a tight lie and being off 20-30 yards distance wise and basically having to do it all over again.

Man, I wish my game were that consistent. If i'm hitting my driver well off the tee like that, there is no guarantee that my 3 wood or 5 wood or 4 iron is going to act the same. I try to stick with what's working on any given day.

I shot a 97 yesterday on the blue/white combo.

6405
yards

70.7
rating

123

I hadn't played in ~8 months and this was my 5th round in two weeks. Normally I'd be fine with that score, I know my skill level as a golfer. It's just frustrating as shite to do the hard stuff pretty well and just meltdown on the easier stuff. Shot a 51 on the front due mostly to wayward tee shots, a nuked pull left every time when my typical miss is a push slice. Got that sorted out in spades on the back and didn't miss a fairway. Shot a 46 on the back and left 7 or 8 strokes out there with a terrible short game. If you were to watch a "highlight" tape of my round yesterday you'd incorrectly think I was really good at golf. I am not. I know I am not because I don't play consistently, doesn't make it less frustrating. To top things off I'm just getting addicted again, starting to sort a few kinks out, and my first son is due in 3 weeks

Back to the corner of the garage for my golf bag for a while

Those delicate shots are probably harder than a full swing so don’t beat yourself up too much. It can be very frustrating, but hitting a good 75 yard shot is probably just as difficult as hitting a good drive for us weekend hackers. Golf is hard and nothing will be “easy”.

I am probably better than my generally ability at these shots. For me it's a 54 played back a bit and a partial swing. Comes in somewhat low with a ton of spin. I will only use my 58 if I have to carry something or the pin is in the very front.

That distance for me is a half to 3/4 swing 50* gap wedge with some bounce. I just have to trust myself and let the hands go (don't decelerate the club head and chunk it, just let it go).

Interesting enough, I struggle with a more full swing 54* or 58* wedge. For some reason I envision shots that are lower trajectory that get the ball on the ground asap to run out. I've also used 8-PW on this shot. Just depends on what's on front of me and what shot trajectory I see in my head.

50 degree half swing is my only option.

I can't hit a 56 degree full. It never works out right..

A soft, wet fairway makes this shot way harder to me. Takes away any room for error.... and I have errors..

I use my lowest bounce wedge on tight lies inside 100 yards which is my 56°.

You want to reduce bounce on tight lies. I’ll also play it a little back in my stance to add forward press and reduce bounce.

So… you blade it intentionally?

60 yds is a very repeatable 3/4 swing with my 58*. 90 yds is my full swing 58* or an easy/smooth 54*....I usually go 54* for that. I definitely get yippy with those clubs sometimes and it's frustrating, but when they are on, it's my most accurate clubs.

I slightly open the face on almost all my wedge shots. But on a tight lie I'm going to play it more like I'm playing hard pan and make use of the bounce.

I'm similar but I play with a 52 and its closer to 90 with a little 3/4 swing.

If I have lost all confidence in my ability to hit that shot - and I have before, I'll break out the 6 iron for a little bump down the fairway if there are no obstacles between myself and the green.

Where is the pin? If it’s on the front i’m using my 58. If i have some green to work with probably gonna use my 54 play it back in my stance and flight it.

Probably my 56, hit it nice and low maybe a foot or so off the ground to keep it out of the wind.
