Provide support for your choice please, while I love 6 let’s limit it to ps1 era and up so 7-15 exclude mmos

These games in general follow a somewhat similar macro structure, church bad kill god. The beauty, IMO, is the other world commentary and how they can tell what amounts to the same story through different settings and great characters + lore+ always being front runners when it comes to production value. I’ll start by saying 10 was my first and everyone has a special spot for their first one, and I have played every mainline title except 11 because it looked brutal. So let’s discuss;

Candidates for me: 7, 10, 13 trilogy + type 0 all counts as one (don’t rage I love it)

7: This game was and will always be a landmark in gaming history. It brought JRPGs mainline worldwide and to this days stands the rest of time as an AMAZING story experience that there is no real way to replace your first time. For this alone plus it being many people’s 1st I find it’s the common for favorite title, and we can include the whole compilation because crisis core and dirge were awesome too as well as remake. Now the original has not aged well to say the least, it’s story while amazing can grind to a snails pace at a time while you feel like dog chasing his tail running around a whole planet chasing someone who could clearly murder you with his eyes if you found him, and way too much of important context and backstory is missable (Zach scene is one example) or just not there until later titles (think crisis core showing Sephiroth at one time was a normal well respected fairly nice dude with great friends for an example). I could go on but let’s move to 10

10: Squares first foray into voice acting and the ps2 era and I think they NAILED it for a first try from a technical perspective. While I do enjoy the macro story of this game as a whole and all the stuff published after to ad a metric frick ton of context, I think it shines more where ff7 kinda lacks. This is a character driven game. The coming of age story of Tidus and Yuna, and the entire rest of the party each have their own arc seamlessly woven into the games main plot. We see their growth in real time. It also has some truly breathtaking scenes, the one that pops up always immediately is Yuna and Auron speeches when confronting Yunalesca. I also think it had a perfect 10/10 ending where as 7s was truly underwhelming and too vague.

13 trilogy + type 0: I realize most dislike these games, and I could talk about how much I love the battle systems and other things but this is about lore and story. This is another extremely character focused video game at least the first one. You’re not supposed to immediately know what all these terms mean you are these random people smashed together and together choose to fight fate. Yes it’s linear but it’s supposed to be you’re fugitives stopping for a pack of cigs and side quest in some random town would’ve made no sense. All the characters except Snow (although he grows) have really great dramatic moments that tie in together. 13-2 solves much of the problems people had with 13 given you a less linear experience and delves deeper into the lore behind all of 13 that ends up culminating in LR I don’t wanna write a whole essay explaining the lore but I find it fascinating.

So my verdict: 13,13-2,LR, Type 0

Look forward to what you guys think.

I’ve put hundreds of hours into FFX’s Monster Arena. It’s probably the best side quest/mini game in any RPG.

Final Fantasy 6 is so good it ignores your petty limitations...

Final Fantasy 6 is a massive video game. It has the best, and most interesting overall story, specifically the pseudo-Steampunk world where magic serves technology. Espers and the racial angle is a nice touch that is handled expertly. It has the most balanced cast of characters since no one is REALLY the main character. And it has some of the most underrated FF characters, particularly Celes, Setzer, Terra and Shadow. Using Locke, Squaresofts typical hero, as just another main character was fantastic and he just bounced off of everyone really well. Add to that the Coliseum, Ultros as video gaming's first cool troll, the Phantom Train, that epic final boss fight and score, the new world, etc. and it's just a sublime experience.

Kefka is a GOAT Villain
The Score is a Goat Score
The Opera Scene is one of the best sequences in all of gaming

VIII. Mainly because it’s the first one I ever played and holds a lot of nostalgia for me. It has its flaws but I was completely sucked in by the plot. I refused to play the remaster because I know being older I may not like it as much and ruin the memories I have of it as a kid

IX is probably my 2nd favorite. I didn’t like it as a kid but replayed it for the first time last summer to almost 100% and loved it. The high fantasy setting and characters are great and is something I wish the series would get back to. Also it has a darker theme to it that sets up well with the high fantasy backdrop. The only downfall is I think it’s the easiest title of them all. The final boss was a joke

X is probably next. VII is iconic but the most overrated IMO. I beat 12 and 13 within the past 2 years and don’t hate them but they aren’t as memorable as the others. XV is the only one I haven’t completed, I plan on coming back to it soon

It’s amazing how they put out the greatness that was 7-10 in a span of 6 years and now it takes them that long to just develop one title. Hearing rumbling that 16 will return to high fantasy. Will probably be another 10 years before we see it though

Yeah, it’s 6. Screw the limitations. Also one of the best stories ever in a video game and debatably the single greatest villain in video game history.

My favorite...X. It just hit all the right spots.

Howeverrrrrrrrr Xlll is the most replayable for me. The pacing is great and the combat is phenomenal. Soundtrack is up there as one of the best in the series. It’s my summer action flick while X is my Schindlers List.

Xll did a lot right for me also....except the characters and story were seriously lacking.

It's always a tossup between IV and X for me. I will probably go with IV since it's the first FF I beat and I love the story and characters so gd much. X is a close second because the battle system is incredibly addicting.

I still have yet to play VI, VIII, and IX. I was going to go through them all this summer but have been really busy. I've been told the best version of VI is the GBA version so I went ahead and hacked that onto my 2DS XL so that'll probably be the next FF game I tackle.

If you like IV....be prepared. VI is 4 done better. 4 is probably my 2nd or third favorite.

Glad to hear it. I'm thinking I may start VI sometime next week during some downtime. I've been meaning to play it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

IMHO 6-10 all have their arguments

VI may have arguably the best storyline of all games. I never appreciated it until I actually played it when I was older and like 9, was something that I think gotten better and better with ag.

VII like you said, was a landmark game. It has the nostalgia for a lot of people and the popularity continues to grow. It had a great storyline, gameplay, and the first memorable character death. Oh yeah, impossible side bosses which made it ridiculous at the time. But the ending was not as good as it could have been.

VIII some people think this was a down game, but man it had a unique feel to it. At first more realistic, real-world and then the introduction of sorcery and a tech-world made it just weird. I think the other issue is that it came after a game such as VII where people were never going to let it win

IX came back to some of its original FF roots and I'll be honest, hated it when it came out. Now, I can appreciate it more. The only issue is the gameplay itself is by far the easiest, least challenging, and sorry but I want a challenge in some of these games.

X the introduction to a sphere grid was unique, each character having a starting point as well. the storyline was one of the best written IMHO. The side quests/monster arena like someone else said, easily one of the best. the grind was borderline insane, completing the grid once was a task, having to clear it and do it again was absolutely batshit crazy.

6 gets my vote. It's the gold standard of the series to many. You have to include it in any serious debate about the FF games.

The story, music, and atmosphere are second to none. Kefka is as good as villains get. And the game is littered with memorable scenes (some spoilers ahead). Sand on my boots, suplexing the train, Gau's father, Cyan's dream, Ultros, the opera, a sasquatch, an attempted suicide, the literal end of the world, and so many more. It's one of two SNES games that can move me to tears (Chrono Trigger being the other). It's an absolute masterclass of 16-bit gaming.

7 and 9 not far behind, followed by 4 and 10.

8 is overrated. I enjoyed the card game and not much else.

Haven't played any other mainline games. I do have a soft spot for Mystic Quest. First RPG I ever played.

IX is my favorite. The main story was interesting without being overly convoluted, and most of the characters had an arc.

I also really like the PS4 remaster of XII from a gameplay standpoint. The class-based system leads to a lot of replayability.

15 because i’m weird and the game just fits me for some reason. I think a big part of it is the battle system. A lot of people hate it because it’s real time and really simple, but I actually love that about it. So many games have these convoluted combat systems that force one to spend hundreds of hours mastering. Not this one. It’s simple and intuitive enough to make sense the first time you pick it up. You can be competent in minutes, but there’s enough depth to it to learn new wrinkles throughout. You can spam recovery items to the point that your party is rarely truly in peril, but once again, with so many games that feel overwhelming, scary, chaotic, or prohibitively difficult for newbs, it’s actually pretty refreshing.

While the story is pretty lame compared to what we have come to expect from the final fantasy series, the visuals are simply incredible. It’s one of the best looking games ever. The open world is so intricately detailed, and the whole route 66 road trip theme is expertly done.

The big monster hunts are awesome, but so is just riding your chocobo across the desert, doing the offroad challenges in the royal pack, or listening to the radio as your party drives cross country to the next question mark on the map.

This game is not without its flaws, but it’s just so damn enjoyable that I keep wanting to return to past Lucis and keep playing.

Thank you. It’s such a good game, especially the Royal Edition. It’s genuinely a top five game for me on this gen.

After playing through the full game at least three times, the only quests I still haven’t beaten are:
Stealing the Past (not great at platforming)
A second sea god
the higher level chocobo races
the higher level offroad races
And all the dlc episodes other than gladio

6 by a mile. I'm probably in the minority, but I haven't been a fan of any of the games since making the leap from nintendo to playstation.

6 is an amazing game, I chose to go with the limits I did because a lot of people probably haven’t even played 6 as they feel it’s old or less graphic coolness. Also most of the game prior to 6 mostly all have the same story so including them would’ve been kinda pointless. 6 is a fine choice though.
