I played 15 at launch, and coming from the ashes of Vs 13, I expected great things because the story concept was amazing. I pretty much hated it. You could tell a story existed they just gutted most of it to try to force you to watch and movie and an anime. It’s pacing was god awful for the little story existed. The combat was awful since you really couldn’t die if you were smart. I understand royal edition and DLC has solved a lot of this but I just can’t return to try it out.

I never played 6, but my introduction to final fantasy was through 4 on the Super Nintendo.
I played a lot of turn based rpgs on the gb and gba growing up like fire emblem, pokemon, ff tactics, etc.

My family never had a PlayStation console growing up, so I only got to play 7 when friends came over, and it was awesome, but by the time I finally got to play it in college via an emulator, the turn based combat system felt super dated. I was playing it along with wii and x-box games like KOTOR, Fable, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

I finally got a PS4 last year and ffxv has been my favorite rpg for it by a mile. A distant second was south park the fractured but whole. I’m looking forward to trying the remake of x and x-ii

Here’s the story:
Prince Noctis says bye to his dad because he’s heading to Golden Quay to catch a ferry to Altissia to wed his betrothed, Lady Luna Freya, the sister of the Empire’s lead general. They’ve known each other since they were children. This marriage is supposed to cement a peace treaty between Lucis (Noctis’s kingdom) and The Empire. However, at the signing ceremony, the Empire double crosses the King and basically nukes the capital city of Insomnia and takes over Lucis. The ferry service is shut down so Noctis and his friends can’t reach Altissia. So, Noctis and his friends seek out the royal tombs in order to collect holy weapons with which to fight the empire, liberate Lucis, and put Noctis back on the throne. Y’all make money by performing quests and getting work as hunters killing giant monsters.

In the meantime, there’s this weird chancellor guy named Ardyn who’s a high ranking Imperial. He seems to be on a mission to kill off all the gods (titans) in the world. Ardyn has helped the Empire turn itself into a militaristic society with highly advanced “magitec” weaponry. Ardyn seems to also have an agenda to find some kind of sacred crystal and other stuff you get into later on.

The other thing going on is that Lucis is plagued by demons that reside in dungeons and come out at night. It’s not safe to be out at night outside of the cities because of these demons everywhere, and it’s hinted that this is a relatively recent change. There’s all these ruins and craters everywhere hinting at some previous celestial war.

As the game goes on, the days start getting shorter and shorter and demons get bolder and bolder, even appearing in highly populated cities. There’s an interesting twist about the sources of the demons, magitec troopers, and Ardyn’s past, but overall, the story is the weakest part of ffxv. In many ways, the story is just an excuse to explore the open world and for why the latter part of the game becomes linear.

Thank you. It’s such a good game, especially the Royal Edition. It’s genuinely a top five game for me on this gen.

15 is by no means my fav FF, but I too love the game to death. The postgame is a ton of fun, especially traversing thru Pitios and deeper areas in the older dungeons.

My favorite post game quests are the Forge you a Legend quests given by that weird armorer in Lestallum. The Menace Beneath Lucis quests get real repetitive and boring after a while because the dungeons are mostly the same (except for that one where you can’t use recovery items).

It saddens me to see so few people list IX as their favorite. IX is not only the best Final Fantasy game it's my favorite game of all-time. After that it would be VI, VIII, IV, and then VII (which is a great game and I know not a popular opinion to rank 5th).

Zodiac age is awesome. I love 12 it has some amazing characters Ike Balthier, Gabranth, and Basch. Then some cut out anime teen boy insert like Vaan. I like the politically driven aspect of a FF game (which of course gets more or or less abandoned later for their version of gods). I would play FF tactics first so you have an introduction to Ivalice and who the tuck some of this stuff is. It’s easier than OG 12 obvs because you can pick 2 jobs instead of 1 but still has some super challenging fights

9 to me was kinda lost because it wasn’t marketed and released in a weird timing window between 8 and the fancy new PS2 10.I love the themes especially Vivi and really questioning what it means to live. I love how it’s basically a love letter to all FF that game before it. It’s got charm and humor, but Terra, Kuja, Garland, the whole plan to interrupt the soul cycle using the IIfa tree. None of that landed for me as it felt like it was hamfisted all right there at the end.

Also as an aside, anyone who hasn’t played Type 0 should. It would help to know the lore behind FF 13 trilogy as they share stuff but it’s not necessary at all. It’s the only M rated FF game ever and boy it earns it, plus they actually give you Gilgamesh origins story in such an obscure title.

12 had the hardest final boss by far IMO. I went into that final fight with Vane way over confident and had to use everything in my arsenal to take down his final form. Took about 5-6 tries. 13, while the most shite on ff May have had the best ending IMO. That song they play at the end while Fang and the other little girl (brain fart) turn to crystal hits right in the feels

13s soundtrack is one of if not the best in the series. The real fault is the lore is hidden in the logs. Plot was maybe a 7/10 for me but the game is beautiful and combat doesn’t get stale. The hunt fights are great. Will probably play it again shortly and will be right behind X as my most played of them all.

I agree. I nerd out on these tunes all the time:

Gapra Whitewood OST

Sunleth Waterscape

Sidenote: how awesome is the Bahamut hymn of the faith from X:

Sunleth is where it is at. But all of it is great.

Same composer was used for 7 remake and I could tell quickly.

Idk if you’ve a played the whole trilogy but new game + on Hard in Lightning Returns is well renown for the final boss (basically the ultimate god of the whole trilogy lore) for being one of if not the hardest fights in FF. I suggest trying it and getting raped

FF9 is my favorite but I've only played 1, 9, and 12. FF9 has the middle ages fantasy setting that I like for these type of games plus the fighting system is similar to the classic turn based rpg combat of the first one. The relationships between Zidane and Dagger and Dagger and the queen were really good. Steiner and Vivi had great stories as well.

Idk I enjoyed 9 for its high fantasy setting and throw backs to all the older titles but the only character that resonated with me was Vivi, and his arc of finding meaning in life no matter what or how short.

You probably wouldn’t like 15, then. It’s set in this weird sorta 1950’s Route 66, sorta modern Tokyo, sorta Renaissance era Europe, sorta futuristic industrial thing.

I need to play them all. Just played like half of Xlll-2 and did enjoy it some. Don’t like the idea of being timed in the 3rd though.

13-2 is amazing you should finish it. As for the time mechanic on LR there are ways to manipulate it. I suggest following true achievements walkthrough for your first run. Basically you can add days to the total with side quest and stuff and you’ll have like 2 free days left. Then on a second run so it yourself

Caius is such an underrated villain and character.
