I know. I'm just saying that his argument sucks.

And PSN/XBL will still offer digital downloads for the PS4/X720

even still, it's not like a plastic disc is really limited supply, it only costs a few cents to stamp a new one.

I don't feel bad for Gamestop. They will no longer be able to rape people anymore. It will frick me over because I get a lot of games off of half.com.

yeah, the people selling on ebay... watching what consoles go for on ebay right after they launch is hilarious. it is amazing what some people will pay

Naturally, elasticity comes into play. And of course the fact these are luxury, non essential items.

assuming gamestop somehow continues to stay afloat and acts as a point of sale for used games still...

I'll use this scenario...

Game comes out. Lot of hype. Sells for 100 bucks.

Game sucks, 70% wants to trade it in... what price does gamestop pay here, knowing

1) an unlock fee awaits the second buyer
2) the game sucked.

Assume no one will pay more for used over new..the total for the consumer must be under 100 then.

If the "unlock fee" is 100 as well, then gamestop won't make shite.

If gamestop won't make shite, they won't buyback. On their side, demand decreases while supply (people wanting to tradein) increases.

Thus causing used game prices to plummet, if gamestop even manages to stay in the market. I suspect not...there will be no gamestop type places, just Craigslist/ebay type 1time transactions

It all depends on variables, what the "unlock fee" is compared to the msrp . if its 100% , byebye demand of used games.

I'm a bit rusty on microeconomics though.

I will get the Xbox at launch no doubt but I will wait a while and MAYBE get a PS4. I hardly play my PS3 anyway and have been thinking of going ahead and selling it before the official announcement of PS4 which will no doubt crash the used value of PS3.

You could argue gaming has turned into a cartel.

Considering that consoles need gaming companies to make games, and gaming companies need consoles to play their console games, collusion amongst them was inevitable.

Neither of them liked the cut gamestop was getting, and have figured a way to make that money, there own.

But if these prices increase, and the used game markets die, then games better be frickin REAL good or no one will buy after initial reviews, hurting their bottom line bad.

Meh, the movie industry has been popping out with shite for a long time now, and it really hasn't hurt them too much.

Video games are getting so expensive to make, its starting to resemble that industry. The only thing we can cling on is its a lot tougher to sell toys based on video games (not impossible though, see Chief, Master).

If gaming moves to all-digital (which shouldn't be a problem if everyone has to connect to an online service just to play a game), I can see developers phasing publishers out...not sure how that would affect the cost of the finished product, but it should allow developers to release a more complete, quality game.

Dont some PC game developers already do this?

Yeah, a bunch of indie devs do it.

ETA: Their games are cheap too.

And to add, I'm sure my argument can be picked apart by everyone, including those who state my argument is stupid due to digital downloads (which I didn't even reference...)

Bottom line, a used physical copy of a game will be cheap as frick, if unlock fees exist. If a used physical game is sold cheap as frick, then it was bought back cheap as frick, giving the initial owner of the game little incentive to tradein the first place (ex. buy new for $100, can only sell back for a $1).

Seems used game prices will always be near brand new game prices, on these next Gen consoles.

Yes and many of them not named Mojang go bankrupt or are constantly looking for venture capital. Publishers fund and keep studios afloat even after they put out a game that doesn't move a lot of copies.

I can't imaging gaming going to all digital.... The size of hard drives you would need for any type of gaming collection would be large.

Large hardrives means crazy initial cost.

Crazy initial cost means, frick it I'm buying a PC.

Proprietary external hard drives which mean another revenue possibility for them

I could see the 20 and older crowd saying frick that noise and going back to PC.

If they waited 7 more years to do this, I think they'd have much more success. I'm one of the youngest gamers on here, and I still remember the PC glory days of Unreal Tournament, DoD, Moh:AA, Cod1, and CS.
