Coyote,

So I reassembled the entire thing. Plugged power in, with case open, just to ensure everything was coming back on. It died randomly after about 2 minutes, then came back on.

I don't have any troubleshooting expertise at all but is it possible the CPU is overheating?

I don't think cooling is a problem with my system. I've ran it a couple days straight in the past and it still feel cool inside with all the fans and heatsinks.

but hey, at this moment I question every but of previous expertise or experience in desktop troubleshooting I have because I can't figure this out

It could be or your MOBO might be dead. Just because it gets power and lights up doesnt mean that it isn't bad or that your PSU is good.

You know?

I always rule out RAM, PSU and then look for bad pins when getting no post.

This really sounds like RAM or maybe we can do a BIOS flash if you can get a stable post. Pick you up a cheap PSU tester from Microcenter.

What is your MOBO?

ETA:

I have a few sticks on can send you FYI if we determine it is bad ram or an A1-A2 lane error.

think i'm going to cut out the guess work and drop if off by Microcenter. i have a sickening feeling it's the mobo, the more i read and study.

it would seem if PSU powers on, starts everything up and continues to run fans, gfx card, hd's, led's.....got to be mobo. There are just no other normal bad psu signs present.

No weird noises coming from the psu, led's don't flicker, and there were no symptoms leading up to now when it did work to indicate a bad psu.

which fricking sux because i might as well buy a new pc than replace the mobo.
which is just another handful of decisions to make. i didn't plan on dumping $500 in this semi re-build, just wanted to add a nice monitor and a new gfx.

if just psu, i'll get a new case and psu next week and be back up and running in no time flat.

i appreciate the help man, but i've spent about as much time fiddling with it and guess work that it's time to let someone who does this for a living tell me what is wrong.

I understand man.

If you really do not feel like or have the tools to trouble shoot, bring it to someone.

Microcenter works on PCs? I have never been to one, so I dont know. lol

Installed my ssd this morning. Pretty excited. Byebye load screens.

Blitzed, definitely go ahead and purchase that processor and mobo I emailed you, when you wake up

The 660ti may be overkill. Could possibly drop down from $300 to $250 gpu

Considering the 660ti
I would grab the 7870. It is cheaper and according to that information is right in line with the 660ti. I think those numbers are a tad bit skewed because of the settings they used but it still shows they are close.

yeah.. that new AMD-8350 4.0 ghz coupled with a 7870 should be nice

wasnt it you who mentioned i should couple an nvidia card with a amd processor though? heh. I guess since this 8350 is a beast we can switch back to radeon?

yeah for $80 dollars less and relatively same performance.. im likin the 7870 now

I wonder if HIS is a decent manufacturer? 7870 for $219. and Bioshock INf. and tomb raider for free hah. solid deal here imo

HIS IceQ H787Q2G2M Radeon HD 7870

I just ordered this one the other day and am putting it together this week
HIS should be good too since I hear good things about that manufacturer.
I did mention that about AMD cpu's and nvidia cards. I read that on Tom's at one point but I haven't been able to find the article again to review it. It may not have been for the 8350, I can't remember. I think either way you will be fine. From what I have read there are a handful of games that rely more on cpu like Skyrim and those do better when intel for whatever reason. The 8350 will do just find, a 3570k or 3770k would just perform better.

Found it
It mentions the issue at the end. I would like to see them put some comparisons with Nvidia cards to see how different it really is. I am not too sure the issue is the cards as much as the games designed to rely on the cpu.

If you are going this then high spend the money saved by using the 8350 and look at a 670. You can find them for $330 sometimes.

$319 after rebates w/ free games

If you insist on a 660Ti I would at lease get one factory overclocked.

Jeff if you go with a 7870, look into the XT. They are basically "crippled" 7950s. Easily the best perfomancr per dollar because you get the performance of a 7950, but only 2gb of vram and a smaller bit bus (won't make a difference at 1080p)
